There is something to be said for the swingin' friar
If you are going to pick a name like Padres for your baseball team then a logo with a friar swinging a bat is rather inevitable.So I like the nostalgic value of this 1969 Cooperstown franchise cap that takes us back to those thrilling day sof yesteryear when the San Diego Padres were the new kids on the National League block along with the Montreal Expos (remember them?).I also liked the brown and yellow combination the team had but clearly that is not as snazzy as basic blue and white.The main thing is to have a little faith in your team, which worked pretty well last year when the Padres were 87-75 and in the N.L. West race for most of the season before finishing 3rd in the division.

Bruce Bochy is in his 11th season with San Diego and is making an effort to put together a team that can play in Petco Park, which explains the addition of Dave Roberts (.254, 38 stolen bases) in the leadoff position.But if Brian Giles (.284, 23 home runs, 94 runs batted in) and Phil Nevin (.289, 26, 105) cannot put up decent power numbers again manufacturing runs will become the order of the day.Going up the middle you find some decent numbers with catcher Ramon Hernandez (.276, 18, 63), shortstop Khalil Greene (.273, 15, 64) and second baseman Mark Loretta (.335, 16, 76).Meanwhile, how strange it is to look at third baseman Sean Burroughs (.298, 2, 47), remember what he did in the Little League World Series and who his father is, and realize he did not grow up to be a power hitter.

The ace of the pitching staff is Jake Peavy (15-6, 2.27) and getting Woody Williams (11-8, 4.18) to replace Boomer Wells in the rotation should at least be a wash.Then it all depends on how Brian Lawrence (15-14, 4.12), Adam Eaton (11-14, 4.61), and Darrell May (9-19, 5.61) do in terms of improving on last season, because at least two of them are going to have to move up a step for the Padres to challenge the Giants and Dodgers for the division.Trevor Hoffman (2.30, 41 saves) is still the closer and now has lefty Chris Hammond (4-1, 2.68) to complement righty Akinori Otsuka (7-2, 1.75) in the set up role.There are just so many questions here that despite a plethora of prayers things are probably going to break both ways and San Diego will end up back in the middle again. ...
