I was reminded again of George Brett's intensity when he was on a television sports talk show and was once again told that the only reason the Kansas City Royals beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1985 World Series was because umpire Don Denkinger made the worst call in the history of the Fall classic when he called Jorge Orta safe at first in the bottom of the 9th and the Redbirds trying to hold on to a 1-0 lead to win the series 4 games to 2. Brett did not blow up the way he did when his home run was nullified at Yankee Stadium in the infamous "pine-tar" incident, but he was clearly not going to put up with this nonsense. What about Jack Clark not making the play on Steve Balboni's pop up? What about Darrell Porter's passed ball after the Cardinals had gunned down the runner at third on a bunt play? What about the 11-0 shellacking the Royals laid on the Cardinals in the final game? Do not expect Brett to be giving back his World Series ring in this lifetime or the next.

Brett's intensity is the first thing mentioned on his plaque at Cooperstown, which ends with one of the more interesting examples of hyperbole to be found at the Hall of Fame:

I can just picture a conversation in a galaxy far, far away where a couple of aliens are talking about how George Brett would make a good Jedi knight or something. The key thing to add to what is on the plaque is that Brett is the only player in baseball history to have 3,000 hits, 300 home runs, 600 doubles, 100 triples, and 200 stolen bases (in comparison, Stan Musial is way short on stolen bases, Willie Mays does not have that many doubles, and the closest to the feat is Henry Aaron who is only two short on the 100 triples).

This 8 x 10 color photograph shows Brett leaving the batters box after getting his 3000th hit on September 30, 1992 in a night game against the Angels in Anaheim. The photograph is in an 11 x 14 matte and has a small plaque describing the big moment. Robin Yount had already collected his 3000th hit earlier in the season. Brett began the night four hits away, so no one was really expecting him to do it in that game (no player ever had four hits in a game to reach the 3000 mark), which explains in part why the photograph of the historic moment is less than compelling. But against lefty Tim Fortungo he hit singles in his first two at bats and again later in the game for his third hit.

Brett drilled a sinking fastball into right-center for a line drive single to become the 18th man to reach 3,000 hits. The game was stopped, Brett was congratulated by his teammates, and given a standing ovation by the crowd. When the game resumed Brett was talking with Angel first baseman Wally Joyner, reveling in the accomplishment, and Fortungo picked him off first. Of course, this is the only time in history when someone who got their 3000th hit was picked off after accomplishing the milestone.
