A Slow Disappointment
As a baseball-loving kid, I learned to bat well with hours of practice on the greatest-ever hitting trainer, the "Johnny Bench Batter Up."

I was thrilled to see the Hit-A-Way, because it looked to be a similar device.I purchased the Hit-A-Way Softball trainer for my softball-loving daughter, and went home to set it up.

I was surprised at the size of the pole that the trainer requires.I assumed, from the photos on the box, that a fence-pole sized pole is required.Wrong.The pole the unit attaches to must be about four inches in diameter, and over six feet tall!Think basketball goal.That's not an easy pole to buy and hammer into the ground in the backyard.I was reluctant to attach the unit to a tree, for fear that the ball could damage and kill the tree.

The lines that tie the ball to the pole are simply flexible plastic or monofilament.They do not add any "spring" to the ball as it unwinds from the pole, meaning that the ball is powered by gravity only.Think tetherball unwinding from a tetherball pole.This isn't anywhere close to pitching speed.

Worse, the lines are very short, which means the ball unwinds from the pole quickly.Hit the ball and it winds up for the next shot, but before you can get the bat back over your shoulder for another swing, the ball has come around too far to hit and wound itself back around the pole.This requires stopping, unwinding the ball, and restarting.

All in all, this is a neat idea that's poorly executed.Johnny Bench, we need you back!
