4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the price
I own two of these systems, one for my main home and one for my weekend home. I'm about to buy a third for another house. It's not that I think the system is fantastic, but it's that I'd never be able to justify buying three Davis units that cost 2 or 3 times as much as this one. The system does take a while to set up (you have to remove and replace lots of tiny screws to put all the batteries in). But for the price, you get a decently accurate system that is ready to connect to a computer via a standard serial cable. I recommend using a computer interface, as the display unit supplied with this station does have some deficiencies, as noted by others. I use Ambient's weather software to record the data and automatically update my Weather Underground sites with current conditions (KNCHAYES2 and KVAARL3). Overall, I'd say that this is a decent unit for the money, but do be prepared to do a little fiddling to get the most out of it. By the way, I have not had any of my units fail in either of the two systems I own. One more note--the batteries in the outdoor units seem to last forever. The first time I got a low-battery indication on any of my outdoor sensors was after two years of continuous use. The indoor thermometer/barometer (with no solar cell) doesn't last as long--I'm getting about 9 months on one set of batteries in that unit. Sorry, yet another note--I like that you can add on additional sensors. I have three additional sensors in my weekend house--one in the crawlspace to warn me of conditions leading to frozen pipes; one in my hot tub; and one in the fridge to warn me if the power went out inbetween visits so that I can judge if the food could be spoiled. All of these data are sent to my web site, so I can monitor all of these conditions during the week from anywhere that I can access the web. Pretty neat. Overall, I'm having fun with this station.

4-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for (3 stars)
I haven't installed a Davis unit, but this product is now selling for less than 1/2 the price of a Davis unit. Also check out Peet Bros units, which are more expensive but not wireless.

Advantages: Inexpensive compared to other full-featured stations, least expensive unit with RS-232 output. Solar panel/power units have both NimH and Alkaline backup batteries and can install up to about 3 m from the sensor. 3 sensors can be deployed in different locations to optimize placement individually. Power units are reasonably well waterproofed with silicone gaskets; nevertheless, my wind unit solar panel leaked, and I had it replaced under warranty, wait was about 1 month. (Be sure to install cables with drip loops and install the gaskets for the RJ connectors.) Lots of gizmos - opening the WMR968 is like Christmas!

Disadvantages: You may not like the appearance or convenience of having three different outdoor sensors all connected with cables to their power units; my wife didn't at first but we came to an agreement :-) Sensors are not particularly sensitive - rain gauge cannot resolve rainfall rates less than 1 mm /.04 in, rainfall rate is wildly inaccurate but total seem correct, anemometer doesn't "kick in" below about 3 mph, other accuracy is pretty good. Cannot display dew points below 0 C / 32 F, although humidity seems accurate. Outdoor temp/RH sensor seems sensitive to rain and definitely cannot be placed in direct sun. Manual is terrible - as previous posters have pointed out, search for and download the Radio Shack WX200 manual. Oregon Scientific support is a black hole.

In summary this model gives you a good bang for the buck, but the much more expensive Davis models may be better. You get what you pay for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginners only! Serious weather bugs buya DAVIS!
Purchased unit in july 2004. Has worked good since then. It required 4-6 hours to set up unit and another hour to build a stand to hang weather sensors on(look at buying a weather sensor stand but that was way overbudget on this project)

First the hygrometer both indoor and outdoor sensors work within printed parameters. In my arid climate even during a rain storm do I rarely seem more than 80% only a heavy fog or dewcan it hit 95-100% The temperature sensors are within a degree or 2 (found frost one morning when the sensor only reported 34 degrees not 32 or lower).

The rain gauge is pitiful. A small amount of precip will not register on display. Also main unit will tell how much rain fell yesterday but not currently. It keeps a resetable running total but if you get a massive downpour it will say how fast it is raining but not how much until the next day. Also wish it kept a daily total like it rain .25 on Mon and .33 on Tues so on.

The barometer is good as soon as you get your correct reading for your altitude. However I have not been able to find a way to adjust the display on the sensing unit it reads like 22.04 and the the main unit is adjusted to say 29.11 . One good thing is, it is an excellent tool for weather chasing. When the pressure drops rapidly it usally rains. A rain event can be tracked on the bar graph!

The wind gauge may not be working quite right on my system . A very windy day will only be about 17-20mph. However it might be in a bad area where the wind is being blocked somewhat. I will probably move the instrument to a more open spot and see if it will get a more realistic reading.

Finally the clock . A person must manually set the time and date and the unit doesnt adjust for daylight savings. I wish this was an "atomic clock". That never needed adjusted.

Oh yeah two more items "the manual" stinks . Get the RADIO SHACK manual the other reviewers talk about. Print it off and read before your unit arrives. This will save alot of frustration. KEEP the box the unit came with for one year. I read the warranty and they will only accept a warranty repair if it is sent only in the ORIGINAL BOX!

1-0 out of 5 stars Be sure you know what you are getting
After buying this item as at christmas the rain gauge and the outdoor temp sensor quit working. Beware there is only amonth warrenty and others have reported the same issues. I thought that "those problems won't happen to me" now I have a half operating station that is more expensive to repair than to replace. Be sure to read all of the reviews and understand what you are buying.

3-0 out of 5 stars Instruction Manual is poorly written.
You have to read between the lines a lot when assembling this unit. Not too difficult if you have some mechanical knowledge. So far so good, time will tell on its longevity when in operation. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Try to find a port
I own a Sony VAIO computer. In the computer, there are no ports to put in this cord.Ended up buying something for [money] to convert it to a USB connection. Then, I couldn't find a program that would be able to send and receive data to my eTrex GPS via a USB port. Was definitely a hassle.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excelent for Portables.
The cable doesn't come with any software, but is great for upgrading the software on your eTrek(avilable from Garmin's website) You will need a GPS compatible mapping program to get the full advantage. The cable connects very securly to the GPS, and is plenty long enough.

3-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but a cable is necessary
This little cable is very, very overpriced, but unfortunately, for those of you that own the original eTrex or any eTrex model with no cable, you'll want to own this or an equivalent so you can download the latest updates to your GPS receiver from garmin and load them onto the unit. And you want this ability because Garmin does a good job of fixing bugs and adding new little software features. But if you can't build your own cable, then you should grab one of these...

2-0 out of 5 stars Good quality, but get the data+power cable...
The quality of this cable is fine, but it doesn't give you access to the power pins that are in the Garmin interface.Get the cable that does power and data instead...or if you're a hardware geek, then make your own with the stuff from purple open projects (pfranc.com) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea
This pump is awesome. I bought it for camping and used it on our Coleman Airbed. It inflated the airbed in less than 2 mintues and also inflated the air mattress for floating in the water. The deflate option is great too, no more lying on the airbed to squeeze all of the air out to put it away. The only drawback was the smaller nozzle didn't fit in some of our friends smaller air mattresses, but it still inflated them, just not as fast. Its small and perfect for anything that needs air (besides tires and balls). Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best little inflater!
Well, I use this for anything with air. Purchased originally for the airbed, I have found it useful for all the pool toys, plastic blowup chairs and other assorted air items my children have found the need to own. I guess Coleman does make other products that are as great as thier lanterns. They should do more advertising so people would hear about them!

4-0 out of 5 stars Goodbye Chapped Lips!Hello Easy Street!
I bought this pump in conjunction with a Coleman Comfort Control Air Mattress and I'm very pleased with both. The pump filled the air mattress firmly in under a minute when plugged in, and the pump seems to hold a charge quite well. The nozzles included make the pump ideal when inflating a Coleman air mattress, as they're custom made for each other. The air pump takes the next step, though, in including additional nozzles that would (presumably) enable one to easily fill other inflatable items (short of a basketball or bike tire). The only minor annoyance to me was that the pump is quite noisy. If you're planning to use this at the campground, try to make sure you get your business done before other campers go to bed, especially if you're in close proximity.(Also, this product would have been pretty close to perfect if it had 9V car adapter capability.)Outside of that, this is a very efficient air pump - the price is more than worth the assurance that I won't have to spend an hour laid out on the tent floor getting chapped lips from blowing up the air mattress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Decisions and the Sometimes Proud Outcomes
When I purchased my Coleman Comfort Control Quickbed (a decision I was less than thrilled with for many reasons), I found that I desperately needed an Air Pump and opted for this model after carefully weighing my other options. The reason I decided on this was because:
(1) of the name-brand,
(2)the fact that it seemed to be very handy with its recharging abilities and with its lightweigh features,
(3) the fact that my lungs cannot substitute for the action of my machine superior,

(4)and because it came with more accessories that were easily seen inside its packaging than all the other pumps on display at the time (perhaps not the best reasoning behind a buy, but the one I used anyhow).

Happily, I can profess that I made the right decision and that I actually get use out of this model long after the bed decided to enter the plastic graveyard. In fact, it was the main reason the bed lasted as long as it did, holding its charge for days at a time while I tried to find the looming lungs that seemed to only exhale from somewhere inside its interior. Equally quaint was the accessory that let it work as a deflation tool, allowing me to take air out in moments instead of having to work and maneuver the last gasps out of something that wished to defy me.

These days I take it with me everywhere, using this beast to place air in inflatable chairs that I carry to crowded homes with minimal seating arrangements and when I feel like doing something on the proverbial fly. It comes highly recommended! ... Read more

Just bought new today at local store. Compact, light, reasonable price, ... It works ... but ...
Test the first time: The spring pin is sticky (dc positive node) fail to spring back to original position when removing the inverter out of car socket.
Test the second, third time: Even with the spring pin stuck (loosing spring property), electrical function is still working fine.
Intend to exchange. Hopefully mechanical defect gone.

Things to think about before you buy:
Make sure your cigarette lighter socket has enough clearance around it to accomodate this large of an adapter. You may need one with a cord with the plug on the end to fit in your vehicle.
Make sure your intended use won't overload this adapter. It's rated up to 75 watts continuous duty.
Otherwise,it's a well made unit by a name brand manufacturer and they warranty it as such.Besides,[Amazon.com] stands behind your purchase. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice quality, somewhat pricey
Purchased this for the kitchen and installed it pretty much as directed. (If you have more than one-inch overhang on your kitchen shelves you need to do a little extra installation work.) The main selling point for me was the larger screen vs. most other kitchen slimline units and the fact that it has the DVD.

After a couple of months, I'm still happy with it. The controls are nicely designed, sound is good, but the picture is mediocre compared to current TV's.Compared to recent LCD's, even low end ones, it's so-so -- but certainly adequate for kitchen viewing.

Two other thoughts: first, it would be nice if the TV would lock in the up position with the screen hidden and less exposed to kitchen dirt and flying food. (We have toddlers.) Second, the DVD is fairly sensitive to dirty discs versus our other player. So far a paper towel and some window cleaner does the trick though.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best christmas gift!
My husband surpirsed me with this for christmas.Since I spend so much time in our kitchen this is the perfect gift for the chef in your home. The sound and the quality of the picture are great.I think the dvd quality is much better than watching the tv.I highly recommend this! The size is also perfect, it is not to obnoxious in the kitchen. It is very sleek and discreet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good w/ annoyances
Got this for my wife's christmas present. In general, it all works rather well.DVD, TV and Radio (phone part untested) all work well and look good.Sound is decent. However, there are some things Audiovox ought to improve upon:

1. IR remote control reception is too finicky. It appears there are two IR receivers on the unit. One on the main unit and one below the TV screen. If you don't aim the remote control exactly perpenticular to one of those two receivers, the remote control isn't picked up.It could be the remote control shipped with the unit is weak.I can be only 5 feet away from the unit and the remote won't be picked up.

2. MP3 playback mode is weak. While it does play MP3s, it will only shuffle within folders. Also, it doesn't read the ID3 tags of the MP3 files. All you will see is the file name (which is truncated way too short in my opinion). It also isn't easy to get the CD in shuffle mode (lots of button clicks).

3. Tough to get disks in/out.You have to be in DVD mode to get a disk (CD,DVD,etc) in/out of the unit.Something you can get used to but why not allow disks to be inserted/ejected while you are watching TV or listening to the radio?

4. I have not found a way to program a TV channel in or out of the channel lineup. When the unit first powers up, it does an autoscan of all channels you can receive. It appears you can't take out any channel it decided the signal was good enough for.Same for adding a channel.

5. You are unable to use the remote to jump memory presets. For instance, if you preset a radio station (it has 4 presets), you can't use the remote to jump to that preset (same for the TV).You have to go to the main console buttons to do it.

6. The viewable screen angle range isn't too hot.For the most part, you want to be viewing the screen on center.

It is possible some of these can be circumvented, but the accompying manual is extremely terse.Still, considering the bredth of media this player can deal with, I think it was a good purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Won't show color
I got the 10.4" (which is discontinued)as a present for my Dadand it was impressive right out of the box. However the picture wouldn't display with color after the unit was warmed up (DVD picture was fine - just problems with the TV picture).I had the cable company check the signal just in case but the problem was in the set. Also the clock wouldn't set right.I've reordered the 10.2" so I'll try again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch!
Very compact, excellent picture and sound. A key feature is the ability to change the screen configuration; the default is widescreen (16:9), but you have the ability to change the proportions for a normal television picture or utilize the widescreen for DVD's.

We also found that it plays DVD+R and DVD+RW, even though that's not in the tech specs.I'm not sure about the DVD-R/RW.

My only negative is that when not viewed the screen locks only with the screen facing down toward the countertop, which isn't optimal in a kitchen. It will close in the opposite direction, but not lock.

Other than that, a terrific find!

4-0 out of 5 stars Best maps for Garmin GPS
Note that although v5 is now out, it's really more of a map data vendor change than an "update".The interface is identical, and much of the map data is, too.The main differences will be in Alaska and Hawaii. You can use the map viewer at Garmin's web site to check out what the v5 maps look like.

Also, MetroGuide v5 can only be used to create routes on a PC.You cannot use its maps to create routes on a StreetPilot or other GPS that does its own routes. You can use the City Select CDs to do this.

Finally, if you're wondering what the difference between this and Roads & Recreation, that is intended for older and low memory (1MB or less) units. If you have 8MB or more, get MetroGuide.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stop! Get the new version five!
Version five is out, just ordered and got version four -- ouch!

2-0 out of 5 stars It'd be nice if the maps were updated in the near future.
I got this for my eTrex Legend.Like the other reviewers have said, the maps are pretty badly out of date.If you're in a relatively new area, don't expect this CD to have any streets listed.

If you are navigating in an established area that's been around for more than three or four years, you'll find the maps to be pretty helpful. They are very detailed, and I've found that even if a restaurant isn't properly located on the map, the marker is usually within walking distance of where it should be.Note though, that because this map data is rapidly aging, a lot of these restaurants have gone out of business and no longer exist.

I live in Los Angeles, and the area is so big that Garmin split it up into two maps on this CD.One covers just about everything west of the 710 freeway, and another covers everything from the 710 east out to Palm Desert and Orange County. The problem is that these two maps are like 7 megs EACH.

If you live in the Los Angeles area and require full coverage, the 8 MB of the eTrex Legend just isn't enough to hold it all at once. That's not a big deal for me, but it would have been nice to know that beforehand.

If you have a need for coverage of the entire LA/OC area, you'd be much better off with an eTrex Vista which has 24 megs of memory (and costs more than twice as much as the Legend!)

3-0 out of 5 stars Works Great on My Garmin
Much has been written in these Amazon.com reviews about the problems with this product. And, I find it hard to disagree with much of what has been said. However, when I load it into my GPS Map 76S it is a beautiful thing. It looks better on the GPS than on the computer. I also like the ability to build, and save, routes on my computer and then load them in the GPS as needed. It is much easier to use a full computer screen and a mouse to click the waypoints, rather than using the much smaller GPS screen and controls. Probably my biggest gripe is the pre-defined areas that can be loaded to the GPS. One corner of New York City is on the New Jersey map. So to get the as small part of the western side of the Island of Matthatten, you have to use valuable memory loading the top half of New Jersey. MapSource is not as nice a map as my DeLorme, which I use all the time on my computer. However, this is the only game in town for use with the Garmin GPS. If you want a map to use on your computer get DeLorme or the Microsoft product, both of which are cheaper that MapSource. If you have a Garmin GPS this is a product, despite some flaws, does work very well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Can't calibrate it!
It looks good and it is said that it does wonders, but I can't calibrate it. I have tried many times but it fails on me. And their tech support is hard to reach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for PDA or PC connection
The GPS 76 is the perfect portable GPS unit for connecting to a PocketPC based PDA or a laptop.I have tested it on an iPAQ 3835 with Pocket Streets 2002 and it works like a champ.I have also tested it with a friend's PDA using Anywhere Map (a moving map/EFIS type program for flying) and it worked great. If you are in an area that can get WAAS reception, the accuracy is even better. If you are looking for a great GPS that can be used stand-alone or attached to a PDA, this is it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Heard great things, but wouldn't shut off on my deep cycles
This review is for the 2/10/20 Amp version, but my guess is that the technology is the same.

Everything I read on this charger told me it was the best I could get (reviews, the user manual, the product description, etc.) However, they (I bought two) simply would not consistently shut off when done charging my deep cycle marine batteries.

I have fairly large batteries (one series 27 and two series 29) and am not sure if that has something to do with it. They get stuck at about 3.2 amps and don't shut off; one night I went to bed and one battery was at 3.2 amps and the next morning it was at 5 amps and the battery was hot and boiling over (not so SMART!). The other battery had been fully charged and the charger shut off. I switched chargers and batteries around and could not find one charger or one battery that it consistently happened on, so it can only be the charger's design. Yes, my batteries are fairly new and I maintain the water level religiously.

Beware if you have bigger marine batteries...the first few times you try any of the Vectors make sure you are home and can check on them now and then to make sure the charger shuts off!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Battery Charger
I received my Vector VEC1093 this week. And tested it in the garage with my 12 year old son today.I have a car and a motorcycle that have 12 volt batteries. My car battery was just replaced and I want to get more life from this new battery (Sears Diehard Gold). My motorcycle sits usually except for weekends and this is very hard on the battery, but this one needs a low ampere charge. The VEC1093 surprised us with it's ease of use and performance as advertised. We put the motorcycle on two amps charge and the three stage process with beeps at each stage started quick and ramped down within a minute to what read 0.00 amps, then at a very low charge rate completed the charging.Green light signaled complete charge and FUL appeared at the digital readout, which read 0.00 two minutes before.Essentially the same result starting at 10 amperes for my car.It will also re-condition batteries ( my next test on my motorcycle). This replaces a Sears 2/10 charger that I have had for 15 years, but never seemed to help my batteries. And could not start a car. This one has starting power at 100 amps and extremely fast three stage charging up to 40 amps. Awesome clean DC charging and state of the art diagnostic features with re-conditioning. I searched and this is the BEST charger I could find. And it did work perfectly.
Now, my son is confident he could use it on both our car and our motorcycle. Better product than I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great product
I own an auto repair shop. My technition put his lab scope on this battery charger and said its output is the purest form of DC power he has ever seen, evan better than a cars alternator. Best battery charger I have ever owned, and I have owned a lot of them. I just ordered another one for home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally an up to current technology battery charger Plus!
This charger makes use of an inverter type power source which is more efficient then old transformer type chargers and much lighter too. This compact unit not only does an excellent job of charging but also includes a means to evaluate the battery condition. The digital display shows charge amperage along with a number of codes that can tell you if the battery has internal short, open cell or sulfated plates and more.If the battery shows sulfated plates this unit will run a 24 hour battery conditioning cycle to remove it.
1. You are getting with this unit a battery charger that will handle the charge time for you and shuts off when done automatically.
2. Checks for proper alternator output voltage.
3. Checks overall battery condition.
4. Will recondition sulfated batteries.
Clips and cables stow neatly in a compartment built into the charger. Both battery clip leads and 110V power lead are six feet long.5 year warranty.I am very pleased with this unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars notwhat is described, but still a great product
this charger does NOT charge at 100Amps - the max charge rate is 40 Amps - the 100 Amps is an engine start mode only (5 seconds max). Having understood that this is a great unit - does a very good job of charging fast. ... Read more
