5-0 out of 5 stars Design flaw...
The Humminbird Piranha series is great, but it has a design flaw. The suction-cup mount forces the transducer to point in a single direction. Not good for a canoe without a transom. It always points off to one side of the canoe! The solution is a clamp-on transducer mount made by Tite-Lok which allows articulation in any desired direction. The best price I've found is at jandhproducts.comHappy fishing! ... Amazon.com Product Description

The HawkEye FF3300P portable fish finder is remarkably easy to use. Simply turn it on, toss the floating transducer into the water, and then view the screen for instant fish, depth, bottom structure, and water temperature readings. Because it operates on four AA batteries, it's extremely mobile, so users can mount it on a boat, set it on the ground, or hang if from their necks via the adjustable neck strap. Meanwhile, the pivoting display rotates 180 degrees to give people an optimal viewing angle in any situation, while the backlit display makes nighttime viewing effortless. The unit also includes a storage bag that keeps the display protected whether it's in your tackle box, gear bag, or pocket.

The FF3300P incorporates state-of-the-art fish-finding features found in the most expensive fish finders, all in a palm-sized device. The fish size identifier, auto and manual sensitivity settings, and audible fish alarm reveal everything in sight, from the smallest of baitfish, to the trophy lunker. In addition, the FF3300P offers auto landscape detection, an adjustable fishing zone selector, and auto depth sensitivity (from 3 feet to 122 feet) to uncover the best hiding locations. All these features are programmable through the HawkEye's exclusive Easy Touch programming. The FF3300P comes with a unique floating sonar sensor with 35 feet of cable. This transducer can be tossed from the shoreline, bridge, or boat and will deliver instant depth, fish, and bottom structure readings. Bottom coverage is maximized through the use of a 20-degree transducer beam angle. Additional features include an anti-shock transducer cover that prevents damage to the sensitive fish detecting components, and an adjustable float that keeps you on top of your favorite fishing hole. The unique design even incorporates a transducer stabilizer to ensure accurate readings even in the most turbulent conditions.

3-0 out of 5 stars SmartCast is a real good Fishfinder for shallow water
When I used this fishfinder for the first time, I was somewhat disapointed. I usually fish from the boat in depths of between 18 - 25m, so I did when using the fishfinder for the first time. I ancored my boat in a depth of 20m and then cast the RSS into the water. However, the display did not show me the ground, it only showed 0.0m, there were a little bit of waves but only about 10cm, moving closer to the shore, the FishFinder started working at a depth of 17m. Therefore do not expect the Fishfinder to work at depths up to 100ft (30m) unless the water is flat as a mirror. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great device for learning to fish
Got this as a gift for Christmas when I was shopping with the wife at BassPro here in Orlando.I had been researching these units for a few days after reading about one online. The fact that I could cast out from the shore appealed to me so I chose one of the smartcast models.BassPro had the RF10 on sale and the R15 was the price I had expected the R10 to be so I went with the R15.It includes grey scale and water temp as part of the upgrades from the R10 series.

Over the past two weeks I've taken the R15 out to 4-5 lakes around my area to test it out.Provided I do a nice steady retrive a smooth display of the bottom is presented.I have also seen a fair amount of fish on the display using the Fish ID function. From what I have read on various newgroup posts this feature should generaly be turned OFF.Instead one is supposed to learn how to identify fish using "raw" sonar returns. So far I have not seen any "fish arches".I have a feeling I might need to be in deeper water for this to occur.

Overall the detail is nice and there are four options for displaying the 4 gradations of grey in ordet to highlight either weak or strong returns. One of the limilations of using this near the shore is that is does not do well with shallow depths. It lists 2 feet as the minumum but even depths of 3 feet and a bit more seem to confuse it, giving false returns.I have not tested its actual ability to recognize a return as a fish yet.I say this becuase so far I have not taken my tackle out, just the fishfinder in order to concentrate on learning it.I think I will try adding some bait to a line and attaching this to the small hole provided on the bottom of the RSS to see if it will show any fishing coming up to check it out.

I have had the unit lock up here and there, but unpluging the power cable and reinserting it and then turning on the unit again seems to have solved it.The other day I was getting some weird temp readings, it went from 40F and then back to the correct temp of 71F a few times.I also expienced an anomoly with the display. When set to "Black" mode for bottom detail the unit was only displaying 10H/6V pixels of resolution. Not sure what was up with that and I haven't tested it since then.Perhaps its a battery thing.

Overall I'm really happy with the unit.Sure is nice to be able to see contours of a lake as well as know if fish are in the area.Although the Fish ID might not be perfect you at least know that if nothing is showing on the screen at all to move somewhere else so as to not waste time. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars works but could be better
I purchased this fish finder from the factory sales on ebay for around $40 +/-.when I took it out to the bay to go fishing I found that it does not work at all in water deeper than 120'.when in water < 120' the fish finder works as it is designed, it shows the depth, temp, and basic symbols to identify bottom features, large fish, snd small fish. the water temp is the temp at the depth of the transducer only, and the depth of the fish on the screen is told by a 1/10 bar scale(you do the math to determine the depth of fish) the bottom features are depicted on the screen by boulders on the bottom, the more boulders the rougher the bottom (not actual sonar picture of the bottom). I found that unless you can get the transducer to work through the bottom of your boat there is no hope of trolling, the transducer will start to drag behind the boat and stop working if the wind is pushing you too hard, not to mention what happens if you put your engine in gear. from the lake shore the only problem I see with this fish finder is that the cable sinks and pulls the transducer back to you, which the maker advised to add fishing floats to the cable every foot or so to keep this from happening. my conclusion is that if you want a fish finder to mooch in your small boat without an electrical system, or for fishing at the lakes shore, this will work, but if you want a fish finder for a boat with 12v power.. buy a real fish finder

1-0 out of 5 stars Good idea but poorly designed.
I have owned 3 of these over the past 2 years since my initial purchase. I now own none after having finally given up on the product and the customer service and thrown the latest iteration of the product in the trash.
While the product is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly, it just plain doesn't work. It appears to be easily confused by thermocline and underwater vegetation. The programming of the unit does not allow it to sort the difference between thermocline, vegetation, and fish. In addition, the icon-based fish-and-rock display does not allow the user to get around this by interpreting a "real" image.
As they were getting some complaints about this, the company responded by changing the program and sending me a new unit. It seemed to show some improvement, depending on water clarity, but, alas, stopped working on the first outing. Then they replaced it with unit number 3, a refurb programmed to display depth and temperature in metric units. It seemed to show some hope of working so I decided to live with the metric system. That was taken care of on the second outing when a trickle of rain put it death. I could have gone back to customer service, who are quite friendly, but after having spent far, far more time dealing with a faulty product than actually getting to use it, I decided the trash was a more rational approach.
Save yourself the headaches. This seems to be another example of a product rushed to market and released before it was ready. ... Read more
