Update on my first review
In my first review I mentioned that the electronics often shut down.I called Night Owl and they said to send the scope in.They found that the power pack needed replacement. The service was good (no charge), I got it back within two weeks of sending it in and the problem was corrected. I have since tried the scope on streets with street lights. The shadows are light enough to see what you can't with unaided eyes and the 5 power magnification helps a lot. Still having fun with this one!

Fun and well built!
I had never used a night vision scope before so when I read the reviews was not sure how much to believe.This product works well.As others have mentioned the center of the viewing area is in focus but the outter ring is blurred but not horribly so.I used it several times in the desert for long range viewing and found that on an overcast night near a city (the city lights causing the cloudcover to glow)it was almost like daylight with the scope. On a clear night with a nearly full moon while hiking in a mountainous area it was possible to see people a quarter mile up the trail very clearly, they could not be seen with a naked eye until they were within 50 to 100 feet due to shadows.I was was able to view trails over a half-mile away and could see them clearly (as with binoculars but brighter). The electronics tend to shut down if there is too much light which seemed to happen often (as a protection for the tube) but if you turn it off before it shuts down you can use the scope with the power off (the green glow stays there).When the IR illuminator is turned on it is very bright within about 30 yards but beyond that is not useful.I used it in a very dark room but the lenses can't focus any closer than about 10 feet. The illuminator was like a very powerful flashlight, but of course, you can't see the beam unless it is pointed directly at your face.From an angle it is visible as a dim red glow. I like it and can't wait to try it in other circumstances.

Best you can get
Great product, and it's the best you'll find for Generation 1 night optics. Unless you want to go spending $1,000-4,000 for Generation 2 or 3 night optics, this is a good buy, and in a decent price range. It does what it advertises, and that's the important part.

Finding the Right Backpack
For extended trips into the backcountry, there's no getting around the fact that you'll have to carry life-sustaining supplies on your back. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for a backpack:

Internal vs. External
Up until late 1970's, external frame packs--which consist of an exposed, lightweight metal frame attached to a fabric pack-bag--were the only thing going. In recent years, though, packs that place the support structure of the pack inside the pack, known as internal frame packs, have boomed in popularity.

The good news about internal frame packs is that they hold the weight of your load close to your body, making it easier to maintain your balance on uneven terrain. Meanwhile, internals provide stiffness and support, but they are not completely rigid, which makes them more flexible when you're doing active sports. With the added flexibility comes a high degree of compressibility, meaning you can use the pack's compression straps to cinch down your load and keep items from shifting and throwing you off balance. Internals also sport slimmer shapes that allow for more arm movement in all directions--another big plus for off-trail bushwhackers, skiers and climbers. Last but not least, internal frame packs offer a greater range of adjustability in the shoulder harness and hip-belt than external frame packs.

There are some negatives for internals. First, once packed, it can be difficult to grab needed items out of them quickly. And because internal frame packs consolidate the load into a single, body-hugging unit, proper packing is very important. To distribute the weight properly, you should pack your heaviest items close to your back and in the middle portion of the pack-bag. Plan on getting a sweaty back with an internal, too, given the fact that they are pressed right against you. Finally, internal frame packs are priced higher than external models.

External frame packs are very good at focusing the weight of a load directly to the right place: your load-loving hips. While internals, when properly packed, do this effectively, too, you can always rest assured that an external will distribute the load evenly, no matter how unevenly packed it may be. Externals also offer easy access to your gear via multiple, easily-accessible compartments. Plus, because externals don't situate the load directly against your back, you'll enjoy far more air flow. Finally, if you're on a budget, or you're buying for a growing child, externals are more affordable.

If you plan on hiking on easy to moderate trails and you don't need a lot of body movement, you'll probably be fine with an external. But because externals are so rigid and inflexible, challenging trails or any kind of off-trail pursuit can become painful and frustrating. Also know that your balance is far more compromised with an external frame pack during activities like stream crossings and hops through talus fields.

Packs for Shorter Trips
In addition to backpacks designed for overnight trips, rucksacks are great for day-trips, warm-weather one-nighters, single-day ski trips, or fast alpine assaults. Some rucksacks blur the line between backpack and rucksack with integrated internal supports and sophisticated hip belts and shoulder harnesses. Choose a pack in this category based on your intended use. Short day hikers don't need an internal frame, while climbers and skiers with heavier loads likely do.

Sizes and Capacities
Packs in the 3,000 cubic inches and lower category are good for day hikes or overnighters in warm weather with minimal gear. Packs in the 3,000 to 4,000 cubic inch range are good for one- or two-night trips in colder weather. If you're going to be out for up to three days, look for a pack in the sub-4,000 cubic inch range. Choose a pack with 5,000-6,000 cubic inches for week-long outings. And finally, for trips lasting a week or more, you'll need something in the 6,000-plus cubic inch category. Keep in mind, though, that bigger packs weigh more, and since every ounce counts, you'll want to choose a pack that offers just enough space for your outings and no more.

Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.

Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.

For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.

Domes, Tunnels and Sacks
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.

Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.

Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. European style in cast iron.
I greatly prefer cast iron over most other materials for skillets and such. It's all about the even heat. Of course weight is an issue, but that's unfortunately true of anything that does retain heat - the only competetor is cast aluminum - and I wonder if there might be problems with ingesting that metal in tiny, regular quantities.

But iron; iron is GOOD for you, and most of us don't get quite enough as it is.

This particular skillet is ideal for omelettes, and due to the shape, will make them more gracefully than any gimcrack omelette gizmo you have ever tried. Just get the pan sizzlng hot, give it a quick spray of canola oil and toss in your prepaired omelette.

And if you like thick, fluffy, amazing omelets, use twice as many eggs and fill with whatever, dump it in, and let the bottom cook as you half a cup of grated cheddar mixed with a couple tablespoons of salsa. Throw it into a pre-heated 400' oven and cook until a tooth-pick comes out clean.

I've seen this product on other web sites and noticed that the other web sites say the size is 60"x80" (instead of 64"x 82" the normal size for a queen bed.) Sleep Well: Finding the Right Sleeping Bag
Sleeping bag technology has come a long way from the days of cowboy bedrolls. These days, there are a number of high-tech materials and designs available to keep you warm during the coldest outings. Here's a short list of things to keep in mind when you're shopping for a bag:

Buy for Cold
It's a safe bet that on at least one of your adventures, the nighttime temperature will drop unexpectedly. That's why it's smart to buy a bag that's rated for the lowest possible temperature you expect to face on your camping and backpacking trips. For summer trips, a bag rated at +35 degrees or higher will likely do the trick. If you like to camp in higher elevations in the summer, or if spring and fall outings are in your future, consider bags rated from +10 to +35. Winter adventurers should look for bags in the -10 to +10 range, while those on serious winter alpine climbs and expeditions will want a bag rated lower than -10.

Keep in mind that sleeping bag manufacturers' temperature ratings only estimate the minimum temperature at which the bag will provide warmth. Take these numbers with a grain of salt, as different folks generate different amounts of heat when they sleep. If you're the type who likes to pile on the covers even on warmer nights, go for a bag that's rated ten degrees colder. The opposite is true for "warm" sleepers--a 35-degree bag will probably work for you on a 25-degree night.

Goose or No Goose?
The most important component of any sleeping bag is its insulating material. Modern sleeping bags offer two choices: goose down or synthetic. While both materials have advantages and disadvantages, down bags are considered superior because of their phenomenal warmth-to-weight and warmth-to-bulk ratios. While providing great insulation, down is extremely compressible and light. There's a reason why geese can fly and stay warm through the winter! Down also boasts great long-term durability and will typically retain its insulating properties after years of use.

All of that said, there are many high-quality synthetic bags on the market and synthetic materials are getting better all the time. While a synthetic bag will weigh somewhat more than a down bag at an equivalent temperature rating, synthetic bags perform better when wet. (Yes, the Achilles heel of down is that it loses all insulating properties when wet.) If your trips take you to wet climates, you may want to consider a synthetic bag for this reason alone. Keep in mind, too, that many people are allergic to down--synthetic bags are non-allergenic. Finally, down is considerably more expensive than synthetic, which might tip the balance for adventurers on a budget.

Bags for All Shapes
Sleeping bags come in two basic shapes that reflect their intended use. Mummy-shaped bags offer the best warmth because they conform to the body's contours. This minimizes the amount of body heat the body must put out to maintain a constant temperature. Many mummy bags are offered in women-specific shapes and sizes, as well. Rectangular bags, while they do offer more room to toss and turn, are less thermally efficient because they contain more open air space. Also, they are typically heavier than mummy bags, and are generally not offered with down insulation, making them best suited for car camping or short backpacking trips.

Pad Yourself
No matter what kind of bag you choose, a sleeping pad is a required accessory. Not only do they provide much-needed comfort when sleeping on the ground, pads also offer crucial warmth for your backside, as the weight of your body compresses--and renders virtually useless--the sleeping bag insulation that lies beneath you.

Great Sleeping Bag!
We purchased 2 of these and I am totally impressed with them. The polarfleece pillow is not too big, if you'd like to add your own pillow on top, but is a nice size if you forgot yours!The blue is so beautiful, and the flannel is so soft, and as a bonus at the feet....a great polarfleece lining to keep your tootsies warm!There is a great zippered bag that is attached to the sleeping bag, so you always have a covering for storage. I understand that it folds, but I haven't figured that out yet! Great bag, highly recommended! P.S.-You can't beat the Super Saver Shipping..Free! pros:

1)the file in original and x model seems to made of casehardened steel,so the plating will chipped off(i suggest the RS model the best)

The best multitool
I have great experience with that tool. In my work, all my technicians and my partners use that tool in a different kinds of field activities. The tools are versatile and durables. I tried the leatherman wave too, but itsn't the same quality. I recommend the Victorinox CS PLUS Model, with a useful scissors and a six bit set!!!

Most polished of the lot
I own several multitools, in different brands. All have their pluses and minuses, all have at least one "cool" factor, as well as one or more questionable design choices. But if I had to pick just one, it would be the SwissTool.

The SwissTool is not sexy, like Leatherman's "Wave" or their new "Charge" series. It doesn't have spring-loaded jaws that pop out at the touch of a button, like the Gerber "Recoil". And it doesn't have geared jaws like the SOG.

However, what the SwissTool is, is jaw-droppingly precise, gorgeous, and superbly executed. The stainless steel is polished, not matte or roughened. Each tool is easy to get out, slides out by itself (not in a clump), and has just the right amount of friction. The fingernail nicks are positioned very well, so that you don't need another tool just to open this one. Once the tool is out, it locks into place so firmly you can tell you'd break the tool before the lock itself would fail. And when you need to put the tool back, the unobtrusive spring-loaded release lets you fold the tool back with no effort.

While this page seems to list the basic SwissTool, when I ordered it, I received the RS model, which is the one I wanted anyway. The RS model does away with the metal file, metal saw, and serrated blade, and replaces it with scissors, and what Victorinox calls a "seatbelt cutter", which is a very sharp, curved serrated blade.

As I said, I collect multitools, and none comes close to the individual tool precision, polished fit-and-finish, and comfortable heft of the SwissTool. When you factor in the low price (compared to other tools at this quality level), getting the SwissTool is a no-brainer.

Simply the best
When I decided to buy a multi-tool last fall I did a thourough research on the Internet, reading up on what others said, then I went to the store to touch and feel the tools to really sense the difference, and I must agree: This is the best. My first choice, if I hadn't done my homework, would have been Leatherman, mainly because of brand recognition. I never regretted that I bought the Swiss Tool instead. Why?
1. The best feature are the spring locks that lock each blade and tool securely. NO fumbling and accidental slips.
2. The knife blades are razor sharp, even after long use, so is the saw.
3.The size is comfortable, and you grip it very easily.

P.S. I suggest you to get hold of the version with scissors. They may look small, but they're not wobbly at all. ... Read more

outstanding saute pan
Is not fully seasoned out of the box but within a short time will be a non-stick HIGH heat saute pan. Lighter in construction than other lodge pans it handles well. The casting ridges are not ground down but you will be using a potholder. Great tool period.
