4-0 out of 5 stars Lives up to the hype
I was looking for a new griddle and wanted cast iron mainly because of the health concerns of traditional nonstick surfaces.Have used it several days and cooked the usual things (eggs, grilled cheese, salmon etc...)Did a great job and the preseasoning is awesome for a quick cleanup.Still getting used to getting it to heat evenly and would give it 5 stars if it were not so HEAVY (if you drop the griddle it will destroy anything its path including your toes or floor, so be careful).Great addition to our kitchen!!

5-0 out of 5 stars We have a winner!
Just received this item yesterday. The predone seasoning appears uniform over the entire surface, although I am surprised the metal itself is not smoother( We'll see how this impacts performance later on ).Be forewarned: this thing is impressively heavy. Its like going to the gym when you're wrangling this thing around in the sink.Hey, no pain no gain!

So let's get cooking.First I scrubbed it down for a minute or so with a stiff nylon brush, removing anything undesireable from the manufacturer.( Nothing was noted ).Next, dried it off and hit the smooth side with a quick blast of PAM and wiped it down nice and even. With this done I made my way out to the Weber gas grill and brought the whole rig up to 475/500.There was an ever so slight trace of smoke coming off the grid. She was ready to go.Perfect!I place a nice 1.0 lbs slab of Ahi( rubbed down with an olive oil/paprika/pepper/salt coating ) on and the stand back in awe. Forget closing the lid.It was beautiful!I can still hear the sizzle... I go for about 2 minutes and flip it over and do the same to the other side. The flip was effortless, no sticking what-so-ever.This baby is a dream. So I turn off the grill, go inside, have dinner, and come back out 30 minutes later to pick it up, and its still to hot to touch. The Weber is stone cold, but the Lodge griddle forgot I cut the flame.15 minutes later its cool enough to handle but still warm. This is what I call heat retention! In a nutshell I am most impressed.Hopefully we'll get good performace with more delicate items as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't even THINK of trying another griddle
I absolutely adore this griddle, and I use it almost every day.

At first, I wasn't sure that I wanted a cast iron griddle. They are HEAVY and not dishwasher safe . . . so I tried a few nonstick brands first --top dollar brands with high ratings.

I hated them. The nonstick surface was inferior. On a reversible griddle, the underside became sticky and difficult to clean. The heat was distributed unevenly. One claimed to be dishwasher safe, yet when I put it in the dishwasher, some of the nonstick surface came off.

I am extremely health conscious, and I use very little oil when I cook.Food often stuck to the "non-stick" surface -- go figure.

I wanted to find a great griddle that I could use for many things, including cooking like the chefs in Japanese Steak Houses -- I dreamed of using a small dash of my favorite oil and flinging shrimp, chicken and veggies on the griddle like a pro.No, I didn't think I could toss my tools in the air or catch the shrimp in my pocket . . . I just wanted the flavor and the ease of cooking.

By this time, I was on a quest, and the non-stick stuff just wasn't cutting it.I did a little research, and I learned that pros recommend the Lodge griddle, so despite my apprehension, I thought I'd give it a try.

Wow!The pre-seasoned surface is perfect and better than any non-stick surface I have ever used.Just a tiny bit of non-stick spray is all I need, and everything from pancakes to eggs flip with ease.Grilling Japanese style works perfectly.

On the grill side: whole steaks, chicken, fish -- fabulous, fast, and everything has those beautiful grill lines.Nice for grilled vegetables, too.

The griddle is indeed heavy, but it's okay.I wouldn't recommend lifting it if you have serious muscle or joint problems, and I wouldn't want to drop it on my foot, but otherwise, go for it.I'm a softie, and if I can handle it, so can you.

As for not being able to put the griddle in the dishwasher:I don't believe I'm going to say this, but I don't care about having to handwash it.The griddle cleans so easily, a few swipes and I'm done.If I forget to clean it and wake up to it the next morning (okay, so I'm not Suzy Homemaker), I just lay it straight across the top of my sink -- not IN the sink, but rather, balanced from edge to edge, on top . . . and I run a little water over it, let it set for a few minutes, and it'seasy to clean.

A word of advice:Just as it says in the instructions, you need to clean the griddle without soap (water only) to preserve the pre-seasoned finish. However, should you want to use soap, you can. There are instructions included in how to re-season the griddle -- it's easy.

I frankly didn't like the idea of not cleaning with soap.I didn't feel as though the germs were destroyed . . . but soap doesn't really kill germs, it merely works as a surfactant that makes water wetter so things become easier to clean.

If you want to kill germs, heat is one of the best ways to do it.Every time you use the griddle, you preheat it on the range for about five minutes or so -- you're killing far more germs than if you had used soap!

You can also rub your griddle with a very light coating of oil, stick it in a hot oven and disinfect it that way (this is also similar to how you reseason it).

This is one of the easiest, most wonderful kitchen tools I own.It is a breeze to use, I feel like a pro flipping all that food around.Everything comes out great, and it is very easy to use, and food does not stick.I am going to add more cast iron to my kitchen.

PS:I remember reading somewhere that using cast iron also adds iron to your diet.A nice extra, yes?

5-0 out of 5 stars Lodge griddle
I have been using this griddle for sometime now,and just love it. If you have never used case Iron, just give it a try. All of your food taste better. I love my LODGE CAST IRON, and I am glad that it is American made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best grill/griddle around...
I just received my griddle last week and I've been using it daily with excelent results every time. Mine arrived with a few minor scratches on the preseasoning but all of them seem to be disappearing quite soon (I spray a little pam all over the griddle before using it). I cooked some hamburgers on the grill side which turned out delicious and they got those great grill marks on them also. I've had no sticking problems at all with this thing so far. Cleanup is easy providing you have a stiff brush, a large sink and the strong arms required to carry it from the stove to the sink every time you wash it (this thing weighs 15 pounds). I highly recommend this griddle to anyone, it's very well constructed and looks like it will last a lifetime with proper care. ... Read more

    Product Description

The one thing that probably discourages more people from purchasing and using cast iron is maintenance. Like carbon steel woks, cast iron cooking pieces require "seasoning." To many this is a mysterious or overly time-consuming process. Even if you treasure fond memories of eggs and pancakes cooked in grandmother's ancient, blackened skillet, you might have no idea how to turn your new pan into such a treasure. Fortunately Lodge has come out with the new Logic line, which has been evenly coated on all surfaces with an electrostatic spray of vegetable oil. Next the cookware is put into an extremely high temperature industrial oven which bakes the coating into the surface. Not only will you be spared the time and effort of seasoning, but also the new piece you buy will look and perform better than if you had seasoned it at home. Just like that heirloom pan you will find that even pineapple upside down cake doesn't stick to this surface. This mid-size skillet is excellent for making frying eggs, cooking pancakes and a host of other tasks. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well, but I don't understand the "Logic"...
My first Lodge purchase was their square grill pan. I followed the seasoning instructions to the letter, and although I ended up with a properly seasoned pan, I wasn't thrilled with the uneveness or the uncovered spots (the areas where the pan actually touched the oven grate while the shortening was baking on). Over time, the pan has turned out to be a peak performer, and the initial imperfections have been glossed over by a nice shiny black patina. However, a few weeks after my purchase I remained unconvinced, so when it was time to add a regular skillet to my arsenal, I opted to go for their preseasoned "Logic" line.

Performance on this pan has been exactly the same as the unseasoned grill pan...cast iron is really the unsung hero of the kitchen, and at a price point that blows away my Calphalon and All-Clad. On a gas range you can't beat the even heating, heat retention, and fabulous browning. My only complaint with this pan is the Logic "preseasoning", a vegetable oil mix blasted all over the pan and cooked on prior to sale, making it "black" right out of the box. While it does protect the pan from rust, etc., I don't feel that it posesses the same non-stick properties as a properly baked-on finish done over time. Food WILL stick to this. Lodge customer service indicates that their seasoning is only the first step, that the pan will continue to season and get better with age. I haven't found that to be true. I've cooked fried chicken, fajitas, bacon, burgers, and various other meals in this pan and none of the cooking has managed to "add" to the original seasoning, at least not in any noticeable quantity. I even recoated it with melted Crisco and tried baking it in, but it only filmed up on the surface and never really adhered with the pan. On the other hand, my grill pan "Gets better every time" I use it (as the company saying goes).

If you're new to cast iron and want something that's low-maintenance and easy to use right away, I'd recommend this skillet...like I said, it really performs well for such an affordable price. You can vigorously scrub this out after each use, and still have the factory finish left behind. However, if you one day wish to have that shiny black, naturally non-stick finish on your pans, I'd steer clear of this and shop instead for Lodge's "Original Finish" line (which sadly is far outnumbered by the "Lodge Logic" line).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Pan Hands Down!
I just got this pan a few days ago, after reading the reviews, which are all true, and I love it! I too bought nonstick pans because I hated the clean up and didn't like things to stick. This pan is very easy to clean and food doesn't stick to it at all, as long as you take care of it properly. I got so tired of buying nonstick pans because even though they have those long warranties, they alway seem to eventually stick, and then be thrown away.. I hate to just keep spending money over and over for new cookware. Now I won't have to. I just made breakfast in this pan, and made the best bacon gravy ever! I never thought a pan could make things taste better until I cooked in this and I swear, you can taste the difference- things have a more intense flavor. If I want to use metal utensils no worries.. this pan is a little bigger than I thought as well.. There are no cons about this pan that I can honestly think about, other than it is heavier than your average skillet, but not too bad. Buy you a couple of pans and get free shipping- now that's a win-win situation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good seasoning, but won't hurt to do it again, a keeper
The skillet is well seasoned. Fried eggs didn't stick on the new skillet. I did spray canola oil and heated it on the burner for 15 min, and then sprayed again and put in oven at 450F for 1 hr. It is now a very deep black, with some parts of it real smooth, and now nothing sticks. Looks like it's been used for years. This is a great item.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite skillet
I always thought cast iron was a lot of work to clean and season. I also never thought of it as non stick. My husband bought me this skillet and now I use it all of the time.It is virtually non stick and easy to clean.I highly recommend it for either an occaisional breakfast cook or a hard core gourmet.Alton Brown says if you are going to have just one skillet, this is it.He is right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing beats it!
There is no other pan that can take high heat on your gas stove, total abuse from your steel spatula, then go straight into the oven for cornbread, next out to your firepit for a couple hours, and all this only makes it better. Only cast iron actually benefits from frequent use. All it asks from you is a little veggie oil and a dry cupboard. I highly recommend the cover that goes with this pan, too. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Review

One of the perks to using Lodge’s cast iron cookware is its superior heat retention. Unfortunately, that heat travels from the pan all the way up the handle, so indoor chefs and campfire cooks need to protect their hands. Lodge’s two-piece handle holder set comes with two festive black-and-red chili-pepper-printed mitts that slide right over pan handles. The exteriors are cozy cotton while silicone liners on the interiors keep the heat from radiating through the holders. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lover of ironware
I love these Lodge iron products, having used the huge 11-pount wok (seasoned it myself) and the also-very-heavy chicken fryer. I always cook with high heat (gas stove) and the handles do get hot. I own a pair of these handle holders and they're fine--no complaints. I don't think I could ever burn myself holding the handle if these are in place but for the price I'd much rather just buy some handy towels and drape them over the handles. I'm happy to have the holders but if I could choose again, I wouldn't buy them; I think those $7 are better spent elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lodge 2-Piece Hot Handle Holder Set
When cooking with cast iron skillets, these pans get HOT, extending through to the handles. I ordered the hot handle holder sets and needless to say, the holder set did not reduce the heat from the handles as I expected.Using one of the holders I continued to feel the heat from the handle. But it works better when I used two of the holders on the hot handle. It's too bad Lodge didn't make one holder strong enough to withstand the heat from the handle.I'll continue to use two of the holders but think there could be a less expensive way to protect the cook from potentially dangerous burns from the hot handle.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm too hot to handle
The first thing you need to realize is that when cooking with cast iron, the entire piece gets HOT.It is an even heating surface, and yes, that even includes the handles. That's why Lodge made the Hot Handle Holder Set, and they really hit the nail on the head with this one.The holders fit perfectly on the handles of the pans that they make. They slide on easily and can remain there while you're cooking the item, if it is not near an open flame of course. They protect your hands from heat, even when holding the pan for extended periods of time like while you're cleaning it after cooking. It also makes the handle more comfortable, and provides a pretty good grip. The red peppers are my favorite, but I also have a set of the green salsa holders and they're nice too.Lodge is a company that is known for their quality, and this product is no exception.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very handy!
These handle covers are very handy and work well.I bought them with a Lodge cast iron skillet.Glad I got them since I know it would just have been a matter of time before I had burned my hand since I usually use more modern skillets.I am sure I would have forgotten to pick up a pot holder or an oven mit at some point before grabbing the iron handle.I have a gas stove top so the other thing I like about these sturdy handle covers is I don't worry about cloth hanging down from the handle to catch fire.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazon is not the least expensive
Good product but found the exact 2 piece set cheaper than Amazon's $7.99 at Fisher Hardware for $4.89.Wish I had checked there first.

I can't give the full 5 stars based on the deal as a whole. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If I had to choose...
If I were stranded on a desert island with only one cooking utensil allowed, it would be a very hard choice between my Wusthof chefs' knife and the Lodge Dutch oven. I cannot begin to describe the versatility of this pot without sounding like an ad. Suffice it to say that it never leaves my stove top, except when I put it in the oven. Browning, braising, stewing...whatever, this is my weapon of choice more often than not (and I have a decent selection of pots and pans). Add to that the fact that abusing it on campfires only makes it better and what is left to say? As far as I'm concerned, a cast iron Dutch oven is the most utterly useful kitchen pot ever devised, and my kids aren't getting mine until I'm totally non compos mentis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Lodge will outlive you!
Cast Iron is ALWAYS a good value for the money and it's indestructable (I'm still using my mother's Lodge skillet that she got for a wedding gift in 1954). This dutch oven goes from the table to the campground with ease. It stews and bakes beautifully - get a dutch oven cookbook and learn how to make campfire biscuits as well as those stews and chilis at home! Cast Iron still manages to look dressy on a table and you can tote it from your stove to the church potluck! Also makes a fabulous wedding, shower, or housewarming gift. Forget expensive wedding registries - buy the bride this Lodge Dutch Oven andLodge Cast Iron Skillet. She'll hand them down to the next generation. Also great for those kids who just moved into their first apartment - they'll never destroy THIS piece of cookware no matter what they burn! A must have for EVERY cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars yumm....beats any crockpot!!!
Just cooked my first of hopefully hundreds..thousand of dishes in this beauty.. I made lamb chop stew. I cooked it for 2 hours but it tasted like all day simmering stew. When my husband first saw the pot he sarcastically made some remark about medieval times..but when he saw and tasted the stew..he apologized!!
I usually make very tasty dishes but something about cast iron...
I am buying nothing but iron from now on..I'm hooked.
This pot is roomy and has high dimensions. It does come preseasoned and is pitch black, not shiny though..the way a well seasoned iron should look, but that comes with time. I re-seasoned mine just for the shine. For those of you who don't cook in cast iron you do not know what you are missing!!!
Forgot to metion what a wonderful deep fryer this oven makes!! Talk about crispy/juicy fried chicken..Perfect, just make sure you give it ample time to heat up and your'e good to go! no more POPEYES!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite piece of cookware
This versatile piece performs perfectly for all the dishes we New Englanders make to keep us warm in the winter: pot roast, soups, stews, chili, you name it. The lid fits nice and tight, so oven-braised dishes turn out beautifully. Its even heating and amazing heat retention allow for perfect stovetop simmering over long periods on very low heat. Like any cast iron, it's heavy, though the well-designed handle makes the pot easier to wield. If you don't require the chic looks of an expensive Le Crueset french oven, save yourself some cash -- this one perfoms just as well at a fraction of the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Staple Cookware Item of Any True Cook
Getting in the kitchen, and cooking is very popular these days. Especially with the advent of cable, and the plethora of channels showing cooking, and food travel (i.e. Food Network, Travel Channel, PBS, etc.,) people not only want to try cooking new things, but desire having the latest greatest cooking utensils. With that said, you can not possibly consider your kitchenware complete without at least a basic cast iron dutch oven, an iron skillet, and a cast iron fryer.

I don't care how much you paid for your caphalon, all-clad, anolon, or scan pan... NOTHING DUPLICATES CAST IRONS HEAT RETENTION AND DISPERSMENT QUALITIES!Some things like browning beef for chili, frying good old fashion chicken or catfish can be done with other cookware, but not even close to the same taste or appearance.

It use to be that cast iron was too much of a pain, due to the long tedious seasoning process. Logde Logic has not only done that for you, but whatever process they use, makes it work like nonstick, and cleans up with hot water and a nylon brush.

Cheap, Free shipping, and easily the best cookware you will buy, no matter what big names you have in the kitchen.

1-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product terribile packaging
I own many excellent Lodge products and have purchased many of them from Amazon with good results. However, this is one item you do not want to order over the web. This dutch oven is poorly packaged and has arrived with a broken handle TWICE! The first shipmet was shipped in the lodge box and the image of the product was completely worn off the box from the rough handling. The replacement shipment was inside a box from Amazon that was twice as large but it was almost completely broken apart when it was received because there was too few airbags yo keep the lodge box from shifting around durind shipment, after two damaged shipments I requested a refund. If you are looking for a 7 quart Dutch Oven, I suggest the 7 quart lodge with the loop handle it shouldn't be damaged during shipment. Lodge has great products and I have had very many excellent transactions through Amazon, however if you order this product chances are at best 50/50 it will arrive damaged,(in my case 100%)the item is too heavy for the packaging. Save yourself the aggravation of sending it back and order the Lodge 7 quart with loop handle.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broken
The item came in completely broken due to poor packaging by the company. There is absolutely nothing to protect the handles (which were broken off) and the lid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the style
Love the design, but think this new thinner line of Lodge products may not be as good as the regular finish which is thicker and like the piece that my elders have passed down to me, which have been on many a cattle round up, camping trip or home table. Their new enamel line I love.I own so many Lodge products and love the new Enamel Dutch Oven, in Patriot Red, and the 5 quart size which are better in my opinion than the French Le Creuset and Emile Henry pieces that I own.And its great to be able to buy 'American Made'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product...poor product packaging
This product is too poorly packaged by the company to ship anywhere. The pot weighs over 17lbs but only had one thin pad protecting the lid and one small plastic air bubble for pot padding. The product box had 2 holes in it from the handles punching through and part of the pre-seasoning was worn off by the lid scraping against the top of the pot. This will be a gift and even the picture of the pot on the outside of the box was worn off.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not quite the usual Lodge standard
I've owned several other Lodge products, both natural finish and preseasoned. When possible, I've usually been willing to spend and extra buck or two to get the preseasoned version of a cookware, because they've been worth it.The preseasoned cast iron cookware comes pitch black, like someone has cooked 200 pounds of bacon in it.However, something is amiss with this 7qt Dutch Oven - it didn't meet my expectation of what a Lodge preseason cookware usually is.

When I got this Dutch Oven from Amazon, I was a bit shocked to find the finish was dark gray, instead of the deep black of evry other Lodge preseasoned item I own.But there were patches near the handle and rim of deep black coating. It seemed like something went wrong during the preseasoning process and that the coating had almost completely peeled off, leaving tiny remnants. There were several small pits on the lid as well. And the inside of the pot felt rough, not smooth like my other Lodge pans.

Amazon did not want the pot back and were nice enough to give me a refund without return. So I called up Lodge to see what was up.They have an incredibly friendly customer assistance team. They even returned my calls and remembered my name when I called them back.Lodge sent me a replacement dutch oven without any hassle.

Unfortunately, the second Dutch Oven looked just like the first.Maybe it was from the same batch, but it just seems like Lodge isn't doing a good job of quality control with this particular item. There was also a half pound difference between the two pots; perhaps this is normal. In addition, the replacement pot had a broken handle.

Having gotten the pot for free, I decided to try it out.But first I washed the pot and seasoned it properly myself!I melted some Crisco, rubbed the entire pot and lid (inside and out) with a LIGHT coating, and placed it upside down in a 425 oven for 1.5 hours (put some foil on the bottom to catch the drips).I turned the oven off and let the pot cool in the oven (otherwise it can crack). Then I repeated the procedure twice. Now I finally had a nice deep black pot!Plus, the inside of the pot had actually become smooth as well!

Due to the enormous size of the pot (12" wide and 16 pounds), the walls seem thinner than the smaller size dutch ovens. So the pot doesn't seem to heat as evenly as Lodge's other products. But perhaps it has something to do with my burners not being large enough for this big pot.

Despite the faults, I actually do like this Dutch Oven.It has always browned meats well and is absolutely perfect for braising on the stovetop or the oven. There's almost no leakage of steam from the lid, so you don't have to worry about adding water during long sessions in the oven. The inside of the lid is different from Lodge's other lids:There are concentric raised rings, as opposed to the spikes on the other models.I like the rings better since it makes the lid easier to clean and season, but it might be less efficient at keeping the food moist.I wouldn't worry about it.I do like the more modern style of the Pro Logic series.

So, if you find this cheap enough (I got mine for thirty-seven bucks), get it and season it yourself.Don't bother paying a premium over the non-seasoned model. But there's also another line of preseasoned Lodge cookware that's not Pro Logic.I've seen that line's Dutch Oven at the stores and it seems to be properly seasoned.

Lodge is still a much better deal than other manufacturers, specially for Dutch Ovens.Ultimately, this is still a good product and will get the job done. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little pan
There is NOTHING like this for making cornbread.I would never go back to making cornbread the way I used to (gasp...in glass pans or muffin tins) before I bought this pan.I always wondered why my cornbread didn't come out right. Now I know!

I'm still using the Lodge Cast Iron Skillet that my mother got for a wedding present in 1954! I give this pre-seasoned version as wedding gifts, housewarming gifts, and to those kids stepping out into their own apartments. Cast Iron is ALWAYS a superior value for the money, and this pre-seasoned version takes the hassle out of "getting it ready to use." Forget expensive wedding registries - buy the bride a Lodge Cast Iron Skillet and Dutch Oven! She'll hand it down to the next generation. A must have for EVERY kitchen

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Little Fry Pan for One
I cook for myself, so this little skillet is the perfect size for 3-egg omelet in the morning, or veggie saute for dinner. I am a small to medium sized female w/ skinny arms, but this skillet is not too heavy so I can still lift it w/ one arm. It's not really non-stick because the eggs won't easily slide off the pan like they would from a good new non-stick pan, but it's much much better compared w/ my stainless steel skillets. As long as you soak the pan in water after cooking, by the time you finish your meal, the food residue can be easily washed off with a brush or sponge. I use a nylon dish brush with hot water and cleaning is very fast and easy. I never use soap or steel wool. Leaving a bit grease on acts like re-seasoning. This is the same way I take care of my carbon-steel wok. The only complaint I have is that the handle is way too short. The skillet is relatively heavy but even with my small hands it still feels as if the handle only fits half of my palm, so it forces your hand to hold it really close to the hot pan - really bad design. Though I use it everyday and find it indispensable, the short handle alone is why I am unwilling to give it a five star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, preseasoned cast iron!
Boy am I glad that I found these here on Amazon.I just love the taste of food cooked in cast iron but absolutely hate taking care of it.My first set rusted on me since I was clueless and now, well, I don't have to worry as much! The preseasoning is just wonderful and cleanup is just a snap. You can't use soap on these pans, just hot water and a soft brush. You can even spray with Pam instead of rubbing on oil if you'd like. What a great idea - now I just wish they'd compete with Le Creuset and make the porcelain-covered cast iron. That would just be perfect! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Nice pan, terrible delivery time
These guys are terrible. I ordered my pan Dec 11 and although they appear to have this in stock (I can reorder it and get it a couple of days??), I have been told that I may not get the pan until February!! I was not notified until 2 days before Christmas.

Finally received the pan 01/11/2005. ONE MONTH after I ordered it.

5-0 out of 5 stars what a beauty!
pan- seared a WHOLE chicken oven roaster in this skillet yesterday and what a beautiful crust it gave that bird!!! Not with any other pan EVER did I get such results. Then I transferred it to the oven, unlike before I would have to transfer into another long baking dish... the chicken would never stay intact and I would have more dirty dishes to wash!
It was soooooooo delicious! We ate from it till we coldn't eat no more!
I anticipate cooking in this one everyday.
This skillet is very generous and I did buy the lid for it, that's another story/review..what another great peice to have after you season that big ol' lid(comes unseasoned). Helper handle is a must cause it's impossible to carry this skillet with one handle(very heavy alone so with food it weighs a ton!), be careful always to cover the handle after the iron gets hot...ouch!
I gotta say I don't know how the heck I was living without cast iron. It did take me a while to get a hang of the seasoning process because even with those preseasoned peices you still really gotta season it yourself to get that non-stick and glossy surface. So after a few episodes of pooling of seasoning andand trying out different kinds of shortenings and oils and smoke detectors going off, I finally found my own method...I hope you find yours. It's very simple though like I said once you get the hang of it, and the iron just keeps getting better and better and darker and darker. I threw all my non-stick out after all of them warped...and the crazy thing about it is that they were top-of-the-line...triple the cost of iron. I bought them from Macy's, Bloomingdale's ...expensive..make a long story short.
I love this pot and with some TLC you will love it too and perhaps give it to someone you really, really, really love after 30 years or so!

I purchased this skillet after I recieved the 15inch Lodge Skillet and was shocked by the size. This one is perfect! Not too big, not too small, absolutely PERFECT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this item!!!
I can't say enough good things about the pre-seasoned cast iron.It is especially helpful to people who are new to using cast iron. This is a big skillet and the only drawback is the weight, it is VERY heavy.Once you get used to using cast iron and find out how it retains heat and cooks great, you will love it.I find that cleanup is easy too. After you are done cooking (while it is still hot), fill it half full with water and leave it on the still warm burner & the food will basically cook itself off.If necessary use a brush to loosen anything left on the pan, rinse with hot water (do NOT use soap)and dry. While the pan is still warm from the hot water, smooth a thin layer of shortening over it and wipe off excess with a paper towel. If the pan is still too hot to use my fingers, I use a small toothbrush and rub the shortening on with it.If you are cooking for less than four people, buy the smaller size skillet. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I bought this inexpensive pot along with a piece of calphalon.I must say, I like the cast iron better! What a great pot, the size is perfect for those quick prepackaged items us working moms make like rice-a-roni, hamburger helper and scalloped potatoes.Yes its heavy, but it's easy to clean and I just leave it sitting my stove. It takes a little to get used to the proper cooking temperatures, so be careful. Also, I would advise getting the tiny handle cover, because the handle does get very hot.I make my daughter home-made chicken tenders at least once a week, and they came out the best ever using this pot.Prior to this I had been using calphalon and it doesn't make the chicken near as crisp and perfect.Love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Real measurements of the pan
Well, no complaints exactly -- it's what I ordered and wanted -- but be aware of the exact dimensions of the pan. Though measured across the top the diameter of the pan is accurately 10 1/4 in., the sides slope in making the cooking surface a measly 8 in. -- kinda small of you're thinking of frying in larger batches.

I was also hoping to double this deep fryer as a frying pan (I saw the higher sides as a bonus, lessening grease splatter), but again the small 8 in. cooking surface limits what I can make ie. too small for bacon. Apparently, Lodge makes a larger fryer -- a 5qt 12" sucker -- that might be a better choice for a family, but alas, not available (currently) on Amazon.

Otherwise, a great pan, substantial and well made. The lid is a great bonus to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bargain of bargains
This big hunk of iron is one of the greatest things in my kitchen. It's great for frying chicken (as you might expect). But it's also wonderful for frying anything else you can imagine (it never lets me down with catfish), making pralines, cooking cornbread, making a mess of jambalaya, any sort of soup that strikes your fancy, or, well, you get the point.

Care is easy, easy, easy--especially if you re-season the skillet on a yearly basis.

You'll keep this pan for at least a decade--which means that you'll pro-rate the cost down to well under a penny a day.Can you beat that? No, really, if you can, I want to know about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with cast iron!
I've been gradually buying cast iron pieces to add to my cookware. I grew up using cast iron, but did not have any in my own kitchen as an adult. This is a really nice pan, great for frying chicken as the name suggests but is also handy for many other cooking applications. Love the nice high sides and cleans up great. Would recommend to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Staple Cookware Item of Any True Cook
I flat out love this fryer.I purchased it to replace one of those fancy electric deep fryers. By doing so, I've saved counter space, because this fryer sits on your stove and can be stored permanently on the back of your stove full of grease with the cover on it. It will heat grease fast, and because its cast iron there is an exceptional taste difference in everything you fry. Also, you can use it as a regular pot. If you are assembling just the basics or a dream kitchen, a cast iron Skillet, Grill, and Fryer are a must have. There is no replacement item, or substitute for certain things you cook. ...

A perfect pot for cooking baked beans, beef stew, or pulled barbeque. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Versatile!!!
This is a great pot -- so great in fact that within a half hour of its delivery, I was ordering a second from Amazon.

Think of it as: a two quart Dutch Oven; an 8 inch wide, three inch (almost) tall skillet WITH LID; a braising pan for a couple of chicken breasts; a sauce pan; a casserole dish.

This is a lot of pot, especially for the price!

I'd given up on cast iron because I could never seem to get and keep the iron seasoned. But Lodge's new preseasoning solves my problem -- I'm now replacing all my cookware with Lodge Logic (the fact it's an American company makes me even happier).THANKS, Lodge!

5-0 out of 5 stars It gets the job done with finesse
My favorite use for this little guy is to make rice over the firepit and then dump a can of soup in. It fills you right up and comforts your soul at the same time. This pan is great on the stove and in the oven! Also, if you're ever being shot at I'm sure it could easily take a few bullets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this pot!
I love this pot so much that I just ordered 2 more. We put all our side dishes in this. The size is perfect. It has a nice weight, not too heavy to handle.

It comes pre-seasoned which is convenient. As always with Lodge, quality is great. Nothing sticks and cleanup is a breeze.

We are trying to convert all our cooking over to cast iron. Cast iron - lasts forever, cleanup is easy, things don't stick and I feel it is so much safer than using something with Teflon or aluminum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy little pot!
This would be a great pot to subsitute for a dutch oven for a single person or couple because of it's smaller size.We are a family of 4 and it is the perfect size for side dishes like baked beans also. When you don't need the bigger 5 quart dutch oven, this pan gets the job done.As always, LOVE the pre-seansoning! ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars Old-fashioned practicality
I like the heft of cast iron, and the cooking results, too.I have well-seasoned skillets handed down from my grandmother. But every once in a while you come across something so darned "obvious" that you just have to smile. This is one of them. You can use it on the grill or in a skillet.Flat bacon is only one of MANY uses. The handle is also old-fashioned.It dissipates heat pretty fast, so unless you're using it in an oven or on a closed grill, I haven't found any problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars works fine but the handle gets hot
This works great to flatten bacon.I chose this instead of the larger circular one and it fits better in more of my pans. The only question I have is why they didn't spend an extra 50 cents and put a wooden handle instead of a metal one which gets so hot one has to use an oven mitt just to pick up the press.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent bacon press
Nice addition to your kitchen if you are cooking bacon, which tend to curl up. The bottom is smooth, with no places for food to catch and hide.

Cavet, the first one I had, the spring on the handle broke. (the wire spring is welded to the wire handle, it must have been overheated as the wire spring broke loose from the handle. Not incapacitating it, as the spring just rolls in you hand, but annoying.) I wrote Lodge Mfg, and they sent a replacement which has worked fine ever since. Hence 4 stars instead of 5.

Requires some assembly, a screwdriver and a small wrench. Easy for any handyperson to do. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Review

Lodge has been making cast-iron cookware for over 100 years, and thanks to cast iron's excellent durability, some of the original pans are probably still around. It's not hard to see why cast-iron pans are the ones most often passed down from generation to generation--nothing can dent, warp, or bend their heavy construction. This 9-inch griddle pan will meet all grilling needs without any decrease in quality as it ages. In fact, unlike many cooking surfaces, cast iron becomes more stick-resistant with use. Cast iron also has excellent heat retention, so dishes don't need to be cooked over extremely high temperatures. If you're concerned about nutrition, cast iron has been proven to safely add iron to food. Because iron can rust, this pan should not be immersed in water for long periods and should stay out of the dishwasher. Just wash it with soap and water, avoiding abrasive cleaners. --Laura Cuthbert ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Totally disappointed
I bought this griddle after reading reviews from people that its good for Indian cooking. I seasoned it as per instructions.
I am totally disappointed.. my Indian flatbread/chapattis turn very hard after roasting on it, forget making dosas or omlettes..
I wish I could return it to the manufacturer and get my money back.

1-0 out of 5 stars This pan CRACKED its second use
Need I say more?it cracked right down the middle the second time I used it.No more Lodge brand for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Indian food
I have become a Born Again Cast Iron Fan with this product. I have been looking for an alternative to a Non-stick pan for a while. I was surprised to find things turn out much better with this one. Especially warming chapatis and making Dosas. I don't have to worry about the non-stick chemicals getting into my food. The short handle works perfectly because with such a shallow depth one is less likely to cook things that need handling the pan too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best griddle I've ever owned
Once I'd seasoned the griddle according to the instructions that came with it, I was amazed at how perfectly everything turned out. Anything from fried eggs to French toast to dosas come out picture perfect with little or no oil needed. Wonderfully easy to clean afterwards, too. Couldn't find a better deal if you tried. As for the short handles that others have mentioned, I guess I'm used to the short handles on griddles we use back home in India. This is the closest I've found to a traditional dosa griddle, and it doesn't require the huge amounts of trouble to season like those do.

Is not fully seasoned out of the box but within a short time will be a non-stick HIGH heat saute pan. Lighter in construction than other lodge pans it handles well. The casting ridges are not ground down but you will be using a potholder. Great tool period.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
This is such a great pan for omlets because of the sloped sides that allow you to slide underneath. This would be a great first peice of cast iron for someone new to using it because of the size and it is pre-seasoned.I use it all the time & it just keeps getting better! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars European style in cast iron.
I greatly prefer cast iron over most other materials for skillets and such. It's all about the even heat. Of course weight is an issue, but that's unfortunately true of anything that does retain heat - the only competetor is cast aluminum - and I wonder if there might be problems with ingesting that metal in tiny, regular quantities.

But iron; iron is GOOD for you, and most of us don't get quite enough as it is.

This particular skillet is ideal for omelettes, and due to the shape, will make them more gracefully than any gimcrack omelette gizmo you have ever tried. Just get the pan sizzlng hot, give it a quick spray of canola oil and toss in your prepaired omelette.

And if you like thick, fluffy, amazing omelets, use twice as many eggs and fill with whatever, dump it in, and let the bottom cook as you half a cup of grated cheddar mixed with a couple tablespoons of salsa. Throw it into a pre-heated 400' oven and cook until a tooth-pick comes out clean.

Serve in wedges with salsa mixed with sour cream for gourmet-level breakfast goodness. You needn't tell anyone it's easier to time than fried eggs over easy on toast. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for making 3 egg omlets
I love cooking with cast iron. This pan is great for making those 3 egg omlets, pancakes, fried eggs, etc. The low lip makes it easy to get the spatula under the eggs and flip them. On the down side if you fry bacon or sausages in it, the grease will spatter the stove. On a campfire that of course won't be a problem.

However if you have limited space in your kitchen cabinet get the combo cooker. The lid is nearly as large as this one and you get the fry pan as well.

On the plus side, this pan being thin fits right under the stack of cast iron pans I already own. So if you cook for a large family and want to serve everyone faster, this is a good way to go as an additional pan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your lodge will outlive you
The effectiveness of this dutch oven lies in its design which served chuck wagons a century ago and campers today!Cast Iron is ALWAYS a good value for the money and it's indestructable (I'm still using my mother's Lodge skillet that she got for a wedding gift in 1954). This dutch oven, designed specifically for the camp or fireplace cook, goes from the fire to the table with ease. It stews and bakes beautifully - get a dutch oven cookbook and learn how to make campfire biscuits as well as those stews and chilis! Also makes a fabulous wedding, shower, or housewarming gift. Forget expensive wedding registries - buy the bride a lodge dutch oven and skillet. She'll hand them down to the next generation. Every camper can use this and so can every backyard griller. Highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars I've got a bun in mine!
At first glance, it would be easy to be critical of this marvellous 6-Quart Camp Dutch Oven. There's no thermostat, no door, no shelves, no connectors for hooking up to the gas main, no friendly tolerance of drunken British stag parties, no digitised mincing electronic voice telling you your meat is good and juicy, and even pre-school kids know that 4 quarts make a whole, not 6 as advertised. That's at first glance, though. A closer inspection reveals the meticulous detail and craftmanship that has gone into shaping this wonderful kitchen must-have. From the faux-ceramic egg-glaze wash, to the bakelite-effect lid handle, this beauty oozes quality.
An excellent addition to any household.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a Fishfry
We have this fryer and like it very much. We always fry outside so there is no mess and smell anyway. We use the burner on our grill or the base for our turkey fryer with this.

Its the perfect size for frying fish, hushpuppies, fries and onion rings. Makes a good batch without having to fill with so much oil. Our thermometer works just fine and clips on the pot too. We do usually use it without the basket though and just scoop out as food is done.

Lodge is our favorite brand in cast iron. Cast iron is so durable, food doesn't stick to it and most important for us - it puts a little iron in the food, not aluminum like so many products.

2-0 out of 5 stars My wife hates it when i cook with this thing...
Always a greasy stove top mess to clean up after using this thing, even with a splatter screen... it's not really big enough to fry a big batch either... it comes with a nice thermometer but it's clip doesn't fit the edge of the pot.. it seems to fit best in the hole in the small open handle opposite the big handle.. I've got a ton of Lodge stuff and this is my least favorite piece. ... Read more
