This I highly dought about using the same technology -
For one - using it with auto adaptor - leaving it plugged in - and You previously set it up prior the day before - Start the vehicle - and the compass goes retarded pointing more than the opposite way.

I received it Feb / 05 - I almost returned it a week later - from constantly having to find a full circle space to rotate vehicle to reset it everyday - But I hung in there trying to figure out this problem - as a retired aircraft service tech - you tend to get fussy how things work from day one

With the unit mounted on center of windshield - with vehicle off - and unit on - I try testing compass for interference - as quoted in top paragraph about a distortion flag - there has never been a flag -

Unit on - vehicle off - I turn the key to on position - already the unit flips out of it's set coordinates - turn key off - unit returns to setting - Apparently - magnetic impulse of vehicle system energizing is enough to throw it off - I'm not starting the veh - just turning key to power up the dash - as starting sequence would be much more of a pulse. Turning on the turn signal - brake lights - etc - could also create a pulsed magnetic field.

Remove unit from center of windshield - There may be a better spot that's more shielded.
In the end - I found the ideal spot mounted on the windshield next to driver's door pillar - So far I have not had to reset it more than twice - and it's a nicer spot for viewing as well.

In order to make this position possible - I went to local Best Buy to get an adaptor that has small profile plug to cig lighter where cord comes out at right angle keeping cords close to console - the other end has 4 ports and was easy to place on lower face of dash next to drivers door to make vertical approach straight up to the compass and anything else up there.

It's the sticky Velcro deal - and may have to update to be more permanent.

Also the cell phone has a new port now - VS the clutter in center of dash.

For general use - I find it handy when out at night and knowing I'm going the right way after making unknown exits from the freeway - or just knowing I'm on the south side of the Mall at night.

In no way is it as accurate as the GPS - Which I also use.
Checking compared positions can be up to 20 - 30 degrees off and can be effected by any interference The balloon of magnetic fields coming from Your vehicle could be isolated to a point but would involve thin sheet film of metal embedded into a dash pad.

If you want to know just how its performing - get a handy pocket compass - stand ten feet away from vehicle and compare position to the unit in vehicle. Do not park or set up compass near power lines.

Making sure it's latched into it's holder is a must - The edges of mount have to be forced into groove of compass - this took me a couple days to notice - when it kept falling out.

I purchased 2 of them - One as a Gift to an older gal in a wheel chair - and I wanted to be very informed as to what problems she may see before I ship it 2000 miles to her door.

Have Fun

One step forward, two steps back...
Initially I was pretty happy with it. It gave me just what I wanted: the compass heading and the 8 point rose to indicate direction. Easy to install in the car, although, without a case or something, you can't prevent to switch on in your pocket, making it useless as a handheld.
Oddly enough, during summer time and heat, it somehow freaked out and now the arrow points to the opposite East/West direction from the heading: for example, if I head NW, the heading it accurate but the arrow points to the NE.
Need to find something else!!

Useful auto compass
I live in a midwestern city and cardinal directions are important for driving, so I use this compass intermittently when I am getting lost.It works very well and is easy to configure - one drive in a circle and it is set up.It has an auto-off function that keeps you from running down the batteries.I have not had a problem with the AA batteries running out too quickly but I also do not use the compass every day, only occasionally.It has a well designed suction-cup mounted cradle that is easy to position.The high contrast display is easy to read, even in bright light.

PNI V700
This was the second of three different PNI compass models I have bought through Amazon, and I would not recommend any of them.If they worked right, I would love them.But all three of them will not stay on.It says they will stay on unless no change in the magnetic direction is for ten minutes.This simply is not true as all three of mine that I have bought shut off all the time, even if I just drive around the block all day.

baddly designed device
I did not buy this compass, nor I would buy it, because, by just looking at the picture, I can see it is badly designed.

An intelligently designed compass should always tell you, in a natural, intuitive and logical way, which cardinal point is in front of you (and which one at your right, left and back). To achieve this, the compass should have a fixed arrow pointing forward (the car's direction), and on the head of this arrow should appear the true cardinal point to which the car is pointing.

For example, if the car is moving towards East, you would like to see E on the head of the forward pointing arrow, as the following picture shows:

The design error of this compass consists in having letters N, E, S, W fixed (painted) on the frame of the compass and a rotating arrow which points to this letters, but no to the true physical direction towards the car is moving.

A good design should have a fixed arrow pointing forward and rotating letters, as the following picture shows:

Good performance for price
Excellent compass for the money with easy to follow instructions for calibration.As accurate as any OEM product I have had and certainly close enough for most highway travelers.

PNI V100
This was the first of three different PNI compass models I have bought through Amazon, and I would not recommend any of them.If they worked right, I would love them.But all three of them will not stay on.It says they will stay on unless no change in the magnetic direction is for ten minutes.This simply is not true as all three of mine that I have bought shut off all the time, even if I just drive around the block all day.

Can it actually be useful?
The steel in the vehicle is gonna throw this thing off six ways to Sunday. It's too cheap to have compensation built in. Not to mention magnetic declination.

PNI V100 Digital Vehicle Compass
Nice idea and this is a good looking unit, and not terribly bad for the money, but its ability to maintain directional accuracy is of questionable quality.Compass seems to drift regardless of where mounted and requires recalibration quite often.I suspect compass has the same degree of accuracy as does the digital clock that loses 30 seconds per day.Electronics today should be more dependable than this unit.

Not accurate enough to be worthwhile
I am disappointed with this compass.The directions for calibrating it are ambiguous, and it took me several tries to get it to agree that it was calibrated.That having been done, it seems to display "distortion" and incorrect heading information about 20% of the time.Further, even when it thinks it is accurate, it is often at odds with what I know to be the accurate direction -- not totally off, but showing W when we are going almost directly NW, for example.And it has no provision for accuracy beyond the eight directions that it can show with two letters.I will be replacing this with something else. ... You have to understand
I am a Professional Land Surveyor.I purchased a V7000 for my new vehicle primarily for the compass and exterior temperature. When properly calibrated, using the simple instructions, the unit is quite accurate.However, if you move the unit even a few inches, the calibration is lost.Decide where the unit will live, and ride around a while.Move it, if you will, and ride some more.Once you are satisfied with the location, go through the calibration steps. You will obtain a very accurate magnetic meridian.Then check the variation for you area using the included map or referenced web site.Unless you move the compass or the battery dies, it will reliably show your direction.
The outside thermometer, once mounted in the grille, agrees with the radio temperature (you know, when the man says, "It's 23 degrees in Miami today") within a degree or two, well within the variations in ambient temperature.And, if the outside temp is dropping, the flashing ICE message is a very helpful warning.
However, expecting the inexpensive barometer circuitry to accurately measure elevation is ludicrous.Reasonably close elevation measurement is beyond the capability of anything costing less than several thousand dollars.A 1" change in pressure results in a 1,000' change in elevation.Most cheap barometer do not compensate for the temperature fluctuations that affect their measurement, and thereby do not give reliable pressure readings.Since a change of 0.01" in pressure relates to 10 feet, and 0.10" is a hundred feet, the altimeter feature should be considered as useful for entertainment purposes only.
The "forecast" feature is a novelty at best.Traditionally, a falling barometer indicates bad weather, but if you pay any attention to your local weather forecast, it rains while the pressure rises and it rains while it falls.It's sunny while the pressure falls, and it's sunny while the pressure drops.The whole idea that a falling barometer means rain, and a steady or rising barometer means clear skys is pure bunk.And yes, hurricanes are formed by extremely low pressure centers, but they fall apart over land.While there is fault to be laid at the feet of PNI for including such a gimmick, anyone who really needs to know the forecast should listen to the radio or TV instead of depending on a $100 compass and temperature unit installed in the car.
As far as calibrating the pressure, forget it.The inherent error in the unit is so great as to make it a futile exercise.However, as you ride though the Rockies or the Catskills, you may be entertained as the readout increases (yes, increases) as you go downhill and decreases as you climb.What the heck, why do YOu need to know the elevation (oh, do NOT use this instrument to determine if you are in a special flood hazard area-- bad circumstances may result).
The LCD is bright under all light conditions, the auto-off feature and auto-on are very convenient, the auto-backlight is very nice, the unit is big enough to read easily and small enough to be inobtrusive.It's a shame other reviewers did not understand the limitations of using a cheap barometric sensor to determine elevation.
I'm satisfied with it.

Extra Features Are Inaccurate and Not Worth The Money
As a compass, this unit appears to function properly.The additional features are a waste of money.The altimeter must constantly be adjusted (During the course of a drive from to NY to VT, it will be off by several hundred feet).If the car is turned off, the altimeter must be recalibrated.The Weather Predictor has always said SUN... never anything else.I made the mistake of hardwiring the power cable to my 12Volt power port myself (not purchasing the PNI wiring kit).This voided my warranty, and I could not return the unit.I wired it 2 months after I bought the unit, the problems were always there.

Do Not Do Business with this company
I bought one of these computers and it broke within two months.They sent me a replacement and it broke.Now they will not even look at it. They said it is 'probably out of warranty and too expensive to bother fixing'.I could accept a defective product if they had good customer service, or vice versa.Instead, they have a crappy product and worse customer service.Avoid them!
