Safety? Depends on the situation I suppose
Masterlock, most notable for their excellent padlocks, has joined the gun safety fray by introducing 2 new trigger safety locks. I have tried it and used it on my Mossberg 500 pump action shotgun and found its application to be extremely easy.

The problem I have with this locking system and really all trigger locks, is access: what if the user needed to access the weapon in an emergency? Many people - myself included, have firearms for the purpose of personal or home defense. We are now in a quandry where local governments have passed laws mandating that ALL firearms be stored in such a manner that they are either trigger locked or in locked containers.

I have no problems with safeguarding my firearms against unlawful use - they are both expensive and create liability issues if they are stolen and used in such a manner. What I'd like to see is companies like Masterlock develop a non intrusive system that keeps the guns safe but easily accessable in times of emergency.

For now, triggerlocks are just too dangerous when used in storing defensive firearms. ... Read more

Cobra gps500 a toy
Recently upgraded a cobra 100 for a 500... first time out, it failed, leaving me in the woods all night 'till I got a bearing on the sun in AM... When they say take a compass with you, they mean use your compass and leave the gps in the car!!!
The unit looks nice, and works well enough as long as there are no trees, clouds or perhaps birds flying above you.
It's great as a childs toy, or to find the parking lot where you left your car (but not the car itself) $5.00 for a compass and twenty cases of beer, or a gps500, for about the same price... It's your choice!!!

One Star is Too Good a Rating!
Repeating the sentiment of the earlier reviews? Yes, I am. Important to do so? I'd say, yes, it is, since you might think the other three reviewers were just unlucky.

The Cobra 500 is absolutely useless. It locks onto the required 3 satellites ... sometimes. Usually not. But when it does lock on, it loses them within a couple of minutes. On the other hand, when you look at all the features listed in their literature and compare it to the modest price, you think it's too good to be true. Unfortunately, it is. Truly a P.O.S.

Nothing comes close to a COBRA! Don't you!
I purchased (through the Air Miles rewards program) the COBRA GPS500, not once, but TWICE. I first purchased the unit and believed it to be faulty it performed so poorly. Signal acquisition time seemed "forever" and it frequently lost satellite lock. On several occasions, between establishing lock, loosing lock and again re-establishing lock, the unit tells me I've moved upwards to one half mile whereas I've remained stationary, only changing the direction the unit was pointing. Simply changing the direction the unit was pointing (like changing direction in your car or boat) was enough to loose satellite lock! Very poor! I was able to exchange the original unit (unfortunately NOT able to return it) and when I received the replacement unit, it, like the first one, performs very, very poorly. The features offered on the unit would led you to believe it would "shine in the dark," whereas in actual fact, it is the poorest of any GPS unit I've ever used. And to add insult to injury, while I was awaiting deliver of this second unit, believing the first one faulty, I wasted an additional $100.00 by purchasing the PC interface cable, power cord and auto mount. What is that COBRA slogan: "Nothing comes close to a COBRA" You better believe it! Not even a satellite signal is able to get close!

The worse of all GPS'
I've just bought this gps , and I'm gonna tell you I'm totally dissapointed with this unit.At the same time my father bought a Garmin eTrex unit and it's much better. I now regret all the fun I've made about his GPS and mine because mine has 18 satellite connection and his just 12. Fisrt of all the Garmin connects in about 45 second while the Cobra in 2 minutes.
Meanwhile the Garmin gets 9 sats the Cobra only gets 5. Now I'm working with UTM coordinates and the Garmin shows me all the info I need while the Cobra doesn't.
The unit handling is friendly user for the Garmin while the Cobra doesn't.
An overall qualification 0 out of 10.

A truely terrible GPS unit
I purchased a Cobra GPS 500 unit to upgrade from my base model Garmin Etrex.I had thought the 18 channels and FAST circuitry would make it operate better then my Etrex.I was sadly disappointed.The Cobra will not hold satellite lock in any kind of cover at all.I am an experienced GPS user and outdoorsman who does a lot of hunting, and I can tell you without any doubt that the Cobra GPS 500 is totally useless for use in the woods.The Cobra GPS 500 loses satellite lock in areas where my Garmin Etrex held it easily.(This situation appears to be common to the entire Cobra GPS line because I have a friend who purchased a GPS 100 and he complains about the same thing.) To top things off, I contacted Cobra Customer Service about these problems and they wouldn't even respond to my email.So what you have here is a truely terrible product backed by terrible customer service.I would recommend that any potential buyers of this product avoid it at all cost, and spend their money on a Garmin or Magellan unit instead. ... Simply the best.
This is a great product.A medium grit and fine grit combination DMT stone are all that most people will ever need. It may seem expensive, but consider the fact that once you set the edge angle with the medium side, you can usually polish it in minutes to a razor edge.Two things:1) get either a video or an instruction book on HOW to sharpen - there is more to it than just dragging the blade across the stone.2) periodically scrub the surfaceof the DMT with soapy water and a stiff brush, this will clean out the deposits in the surface and allow the diamond deposits to cut properly.

I am puzzled by one reviewer's assertion that these are not suitable for sharpening steel.I used a DMT stone for 8 years to sharpen a dozen heavily-used restaurant knives (all Wustoff or Globals) and since then I have used the same DMT for 3 years to sharpen forged Japanese woodworking chisels (Rockwell hardness of 62-64 - which is far harder than most knife blades).

I haven't noticed any loss of sharpening ability at all and still put a shaving sharp edge on knives with it.

If theoretically you could wear off the diamond deposits, it would still be a better choice than traditional "natural" sharpening stones.While it is true that you can continue to use "natural" stones like a bar of soap as they wear down, that is one of the worst things you could do to your knives, short of using them their edge to hammer nails or something.That's because the key to quick, proper sharpening is maintaing the correct, consistent angle of the blade edge against the stone.When a natural stone wears down and become concave, it is almost impossible to maintain the correct sharpening angle as you move the blade along the concave (not flat) surface (It is difficult to maintain the correct, uniform angle even with a perfectly flat stone or diamond hone but that's another story).So people who are attached to "natural" stones and know what they are doing periodically use another stone to grind down the surface of their sharpening stone so it is flat.That is alot of work.

Finally, I've dropped the DMT a couple of times, once on concrete and once on tile and it was undamaged.Many "natural" stones are so brittle that they shatter or just crack apart when dropped.

Electro Deposited Diamond Stones
Diamond sharpening stone have been around for many years. The DMT stone consists of a steel backing plated with electro deposited diamond grit in a nickel matrix. The diamond bearing surface is backed up by a sturdy glassreinforced plastic base holding the plate stiff and flat. Unlike regularbench stones which can be used up like a bar of soap, the DMT stone hasonly a single layer of abrasive and there for a limited working life.

Aswith any product, diamond sharpening systems have their advantages anddisadvantages. They are not well suited for sharpening steel for even thehardest steel has the ductility to degrade the diamond abrasive much like afingetip degrades a sugar cube.

Diamond sharpening works very well inspite of this disadvantage. I've used them for many years to keep my benchchisels and plane irons keen and scary sharp. Restoring an edge with a DMTstone requires certain technique which appears in the enclosed directiondfor use.

They are subject to abuse and their surface may be stripped ofabrasive if the sharpening process is forced.

Hands Down - Its the BEST
I have used this stone to sharpen at least 100 blades and it still performs like it did on Day 1.This is my 4th Diamond Machine Technology stone.My 1st was/IS a 12 inch extra-fine that is used to put mirror-polished edges on whatever I am sharpening. It still works as well as it did 4 years ago.As with all of DMT's products, the only lubrication used is plain water - no messy oils to contend with, just wipe the excess water off and let air dry when finished.Although a bit pricier than the competition, the monocrystaline diamonds and the thick, rigid, heavy base are well worth the price.I have tried Gerber and Tygersteel stones, and to be honest, they do a fine job - at first, but wear out too quickly.The DMT really has NO competion.
