Duosharp Whetstone - it's good but not great.
First off, the whetstone does a decent job of sharpening kitchen knifes.I purchased the 4" X 10" duo stone with one side being graded as a "fine" and the flip side of the stone graded as "very fine".

The good news is the size.4" X 10" is a decent size working surface.You can hone with long even strokes.The Bad news is the price. A hundred dollar sharpener it isn't.I dare say that if you can find a one of those rare old wet stones that are of comparible lenght and width, buy them.I could not beat the old wet stone with the diamond.

Speed - well, MAYBE the diamond is a little faster. Not much if any, but perhaps it is a little quicker. But remember this, If I had to choose between a short & narrow diamond stone or a old fashioned Larger wet stone, the wet stone wins everytime. Long smooth strokes make for ultra fine, concisely sharp edges.Short strokes cant match it - in MY opinion.

Bottom line: The size of the stone is it's best feather.You pay dearly for that size.Dont waste your money on a smaller size, it may be cheaper, but every single time you use it, you'll wish you had a larger stone.

planes & chisel sharpening
I purchased this item to sharpen woodworking planes and chisels. Good quality item. Works just as advertised. The larger size allows me to use a Veritas roller jig to keep the blade angle steady (although the jig is not worth the money for other reasons).Water wash off and easy cleaning.The plastic base is worth the extra money IMHO, but the antistick plastic mat works pretty well.

I also used the "scary sharp" system to put a razor sharp edge on the blades.This is a automotive sandpaper on flat plate glass.The DMT fine whetstone is about a 15 micron equivalent where the "sandpaper" goes down to 0.5 micron.The chisel edge shines like a mirror.

My only disappointment was in flattening the backs of old chisels.A coarser grade of diamond is needed for this higher metal removal technique. I tried coarse grade sandpaper, but it wore out quickly.The finer sandpaper grades do not because they only recieve 5-10 strokes after the diamond stone.

For knives and general sharpening utensils, this diamond plate is great.For woodworking, I would buy the coarse / x-fine combination whetstone.Use the coarse side for the one time flattening and the fine or x-fine side for the intermediate surface grinding.Keep one 9"x12" glass plate of really fine micron sandpaper for the final polish.

Stop the presses!
I have used various stones for sharpening knives for (too) many years. In fact, I have reviewed two of them here on Amazon.com. I stand by my positive reviews of the stones, but this 4x10 diamond stone takes it all to a new level. I wanted to try the latest in whetstones, and this one caught my eye because it is LARGE, and has two grits built in. It is also very expensive.

That being said, using this tool will leave you speechless. It is that good. First of all, it is large enough to handle anything from a penknife to a 10" slicer with full coverage in a single stroke. Every whetstone should be this size. It is also thin, and isn't consumed during sharpening. The non slip pad provided with the stone works like a charm. Water is the only lubricant used, and cleanup is a snap.

Don't be fooled by the "fine" and "extra fine" rating of it's surfaces. The fine side will fix a badly worn kitchen edge in a few strokes. My guess is that the knife will also be better than new when you are done. The extra fine side will turn good steel into a razor in just a few more strokes. After years of taking time and care to acheive a perfect edge with natural and man made stones, this was an epiphany. The job was so easy, and the results so fantastic, that I went on a sharpening binge and turned over 15 well used knives into razors in little more than 30 minutes.

I also bought the Global sharpening guides for a couple of bucks. They are not needed for small knives, or for an experienced pro, but they make the fine edge look very uniform on longer blades. They give the "factory" look with the custom edge.

This is an incredible tool. By the way, when you are done, you just rinse it and put it away. I doesn't get any better than this!

Great sharpeners!
DMT sharpeners are the best on the market!Although a little pricey, the quality is unmatched in my opinion.Why would I want to keep replacing a lower priced model when I can buy DMT and know that it will last me years and years.I sharpen my kitchen knives and pruners- saves me from havng to go out and buy new ones.My husband sharpens his pocket knives, chisels, and lawn mover blades.DMT is worth the investment!

Really great; saved my chisels
This diamond stone is really useful.After attempting to regrind, then hone some old chisels on a set of waterstones, I had almost ruined the chisels due to the fact that the large amount of grinding that had carved bowls in my stones (which I didn't notice right away).

I purchased this diamond stone to true the water stones and it does a great job, rendering them flat with just a few strokes.The added bonus was that I also used the diamond stone for the first stage of regrinding the chisels; it was much faster than the water stone and stayed flat during the process.

Unless you have a method of securing the diamond stone to your bench, get the available holder, its definitely worth the money.

I did notice a bit of rust forming on the steel substrate after leaving it wet, so I now dry it off after each use.

A woodworkers, gardeners and chef's dream!

Simply the best.
This is a great product.A medium grit and fine grit combination DMT stone are all that most people will ever need. It may seem expensive, but consider the fact that once you set the edge angle with the medium side, you can usually polish it in minutes to a razor edge.Two things:1) get either a video or an instruction book on HOW to sharpen - there is more to it than just dragging the blade across the stone.2) periodically scrub the surfaceof the DMT with soapy water and a stiff brush, this will clean out the deposits in the surface and allow the diamond deposits to cut properly.

I am puzzled by one reviewer's assertion that these are not suitable for sharpening steel.I used a DMT stone for 8 years to sharpen a dozen heavily-used restaurant knives (all Wustoff or Globals) and since then I have used the same DMT for 3 years to sharpen forged Japanese woodworking chisels (Rockwell hardness of 62-64 - which is far harder than most knife blades).

I haven't noticed any loss of sharpening ability at all and still put a shaving sharp edge on knives with it.

If theoretically you could wear off the diamond deposits, it would still be a better choice than traditional "natural" sharpening stones.While it is true that you can continue to use "natural" stones like a bar of soap as they wear down, that is one of the worst things you could do to your knives, short of using them their edge to hammer nails or something.That's because the key to quick, proper sharpening is maintaing the correct, consistent angle of the blade edge against the stone.When a natural stone wears down and become concave, it is almost impossible to maintain the correct sharpening angle as you move the blade along the concave (not flat) surface (It is difficult to maintain the correct, uniform angle even with a perfectly flat stone or diamond hone but that's another story).So people who are attached to "natural" stones and know what they are doing periodically use another stone to grind down the surface of their sharpening stone so it is flat.That is alot of work.

Finally, I've dropped the DMT a couple of times, once on concrete and once on tile and it was undamaged.Many "natural" stones are so brittle that they shatter or just crack apart when dropped.

Electro Deposited Diamond Stones
Diamond sharpening stone have been around for many years. The DMT stone consists of a steel backing plated with electro deposited diamond grit in a nickel matrix. The diamond bearing surface is backed up by a sturdy glassreinforced plastic base holding the plate stiff and flat. Unlike regularbench stones which can be used up like a bar of soap, the DMT stone hasonly a single layer of abrasive and there for a limited working life.

Aswith any product, diamond sharpening systems have their advantages anddisadvantages. They are not well suited for sharpening steel for even thehardest steel has the ductility to degrade the diamond abrasive much like afingetip degrades a sugar cube.

Diamond sharpening works very well inspite of this disadvantage. I've used them for many years to keep my benchchisels and plane irons keen and scary sharp. Restoring an edge with a DMTstone requires certain technique which appears in the enclosed directiondfor use.

They are subject to abuse and their surface may be stripped ofabrasive if the sharpening process is forced.

Hands Down - Its the BEST
I have used this stone to sharpen at least 100 blades and it still performs like it did on Day 1.This is my 4th Diamond Machine Technology stone.My 1st was/IS a 12 inch extra-fine that is used to put mirror-polished edges on whatever I am sharpening. It still works as well as it did 4 years ago.As with all of DMT's products, the only lubrication used is plain water - no messy oils to contend with, just wipe the excess water off and let air dry when finished.Although a bit pricier than the competition, the monocrystaline diamonds and the thick, rigid, heavy base are well worth the price.I have tried Gerber and Tygersteel stones, and to be honest, they do a fine job - at first, but wear out too quickly.The DMT really has NO competion. Good enough for me
I picked one of these up at a knife show to sharpen my balisong and reshape the blade a bit (balisong blades get bent around a lot, hitting the latch and such.Works great.i hear that the diamond wears off eventually, but i have not had mine long enough for that.The only thing i dont like is that there arent enough grades of stone, so im never quite sure if i have a wire edge or not.regardless, its a quality product. ... Best and easiest to use knife sharpener I have ever used
This product is simple to use and comes with easy to follow directions.The sharpener can be used to sharpen serrated knives (like Spyderco brand or bread knives, not knives with fine serrations like those "miracle" knives).It also has excellent guards to protect your fingers from being removed.Expect a razor sharp edge in just minutes, and if you don't want it that sharp, it will do that too.

There are two different sets of ceramic sharpeners included.The gray set is for making the edge and the white set is for honing the edge.You start with the gray set and use the corner of the stone.Pull the blade down it 40 times on alternating sides (20 times per side).Rotate the stone so the flat part becomes the cutting surface and pull the blade down 40 times again.Switch to the honing stones and follow the same two procedures.This will make any good knife sharp enough to shave with.And the best part is, it is very difficult to mess up the edge!The stones are at specific angles and all you have to do is hold the knife straight.
