5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Accurate, Excellent Value

After having little success using a $250 Timex Bodylink GPS watch (see review) in Manhattan, I decided to try this $15 pedometer. At first I was quite skeptical. However my tests showed the Sportline 340 Pedometer having astounding repeatability (better than 1%) and accuracy.

Most pedometers, including this one, are very basic instruments. Inside the device, there is a balanced weight that is very sensitive to vertical motion. When clipped to your belt, it increments the counter as you step driven by the translation of one side of your waist.

In order to test and calibrate the Sportline 340 Pedometer, I walked a very straight stretch of six Manhattan blocks. In the first group of tests, there were few sidewalk obstacles and minimal pedestrian traffic that impeded my movements. In order to be moderately scientific, I was certain to start and stop on the proper side of the street so the distance included exactly six stretches of cross street and six stretches of sidewalk.

After four trips of walking the same path, my step counter showed an amazingly small range of 588 to 594 steps. When one considers the variables imposed, such as not always being able to walk completely straight, the results are even more impressive. As you can see from the data below, the accuracy was quite amazing. The difference from the mean never exceeded 1%. Given the simplicity of the pedometer, I didn't expect this level of repeatability. Moreover, I didn't expect my stride length to be so uniform.

My hypothesis was that the exceptional accuracy may have been fostered, in part, by the shoes I was wearing. The Kenneth Cole Building Block shoes (see review) have very heavy soles and large heals. These may insure that the impact is harsh enough to always trigger the movement of the weight.

On a second grouping of tests, I walked precisely the same path wearing my New Balance 620 cross trainers (see review). The conditions were not the same as the group due to far more pedestrian traffic and other obstacles, which made it very difficult to walk in a straight line. In fact, one test had to be scrapped as I was nearly run over by a taxi. As you can see below, the second group produced a step count about 2% greater than the first group. Yet this was probably due to the unavoidable path changes.

Considering that the pedometer is only calibrated in whole inches, the accuracy truly limited by the precision of the calibration settings. This means there is no difference in the two calibrations as both stride lengths would round to 32 inches.

For the price, the Sportline 340 pedometer is an excellent piece of fitness equipment. If you enjoy low-impact exercise by walking, consider this device as an excellent tool for tracking your efforts.

Pros
Inexpensive
Light
Accurate

Cons
Lack of speed, time or other measurements
Requires user to look down while tilting the device upward
Possible inaccuracy caused by movement other than walking
Needs greater calibration precision

4-0 out of 5 stars It works great when programed correctly!
When I first bought this, I thought this was a cheap product. However, then I read the directions!! I took several distance measurements of my strides (the "how too's" are in the directions) and then programed the stride lenght into the pedometer and it was accurate with in about 30 to 40 steps.I'm sure there are better mods, but this one is simple & small & pretty accurate in my opinion!Especailly for what you pay!
(I would recommend buying the used ones in "new" or "like new" condition - or somewhere that you can return them if you don't find it easy or accurate.Based on the other reviews, I think people just don't program them right.) Check out http://ihatefat.blogspot.com/2005/03/blame-it-on-rain.html for information on calculating your stride lenght.
I hope this helps!

1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy this
I just bought this sportline 340 pedometer today.I walked20 steps, and it gave me a reading of 58 steps.I reset it, and tested it again. The next 50 steps I took resulted in a reading of 69 steps.I reset it, and tested it again. With my next 50 steps, it gave me a reading of 18 steps.I was very careful to use it properly; the problem was not human error.Don't bother with the sportline 340.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont bother with this one
This pedometer doesn't clock every step. I walked around the city for hours and it only clocked 12k steps while my sister's clocked 20k. It's a nice, tiny size that doesn't bulge from my belt but it doesn't do the job it's supposed to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Durable....
I bought this pedometer becausei didn't want to invest too much money in it...Whaoua...I'm quite amazed how that pedometer survived the bad treatment it received...:)
First, I happened to sometimes drop it...Not broken!
And secondly, last time that I put it on my pajama pant(and forget it), I put the pedometer in the washing machine and then dry it!....Believe me after all that, it still workkkk!!!
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!
That pedometer is very simple to use and compact...Go for it!
Hope that review help...

1-0 out of 5 stars These stink
This pedometer stinks - it keeps resetting itself, making it impossible to know how many steps you've done in a day. I bought 12 of them for the company fitness club, and all 12 did the same thing - reset themselves, so all 12 are going back.

5-0 out of 5 stars buy the 10 pack for the most accuracy
As everybody knows, pedometer's can't be counted on for being accurate, so an elementary statistical sampling technique can help you gauge the amount of steps you've taken. With this particular pedometer, I recommend using at least 8 at once, which I must admit is far fewer than the 17 I needed from the Wheaties boxes.

I can tell you it's:
423.687 steps from my apartment to Athena's Palm Fortunes
588.324 steps from my apartment to C-town
2391.549 steps from c-town to exit 32 on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway
949826.832 steps from exit 32 on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway to the c-town near the Manhattan Bridge (on the Brooklyn side, duh!)
3.128 steps from my bed to my dresser

I will be updating this review with more counts, so stay tuned. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Accurate
This is my second pedometer, and while better than my first one, I am not happy with it.The directions are very confusing. I have never figured out some of the features and how to adjust them. If I am doing vigerous walking it does a very good job of counting my steps. However, if I am out shopping or slowly walking, sometimes the step counter never changes.Today, I walked all over the grocery store and the number of steps never changed since I was slowly walking.I am sure there must be a more accurate, easy to use pedometer out there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I used this pedometer for about 3 months before the pins fell out that held it together - only to be lost forever. This pedometer is not very easy to use.
I kept having to refer to the difficult-to-follow instructions to figure out how it works. It has some good features, but I lost interest in trying to learn about them, so I ended up just resetting it daily and using the step/calorie counters only. All in all, I am going to buy another pedometer as this one is useless to me without the belt clip. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I really need a beeper/pager attached to this thing because I've lost the first one I bought. I'm ordering another one, it's that good.

It was very accurate. It picked up my jogging steps, walking steps but did not count just general jiggling. It was intuitive and easy to use. For a small machine it told a large amount of information- number of steps, time, time walked, distance walked.

Well worth the money. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really for the all day walker
I walk alot at work. Step counters I've had in the past have been flimsy and fall off way too easily. I got this for a Valentine's Day gift and it worked fine for awhile, but all of a sudden, it started to reset itself. It works great, it keeps track of my steps well, records my calories, etc., but it resets itself for no reason.

I'm starting to regret the money I spent on it and wished I'd just gotten a small, cheap step counter. The only reason I got this one was my boyfriend has it as well and his works great.

I've tried to contact the company that makes it, but never heard from them. My guess is that it's not meant to be worn for the whole day, just when exercising or jogging.

Avoid this one unless you only want to use it for exercising and not the entire day. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good pedometer
I am really satisfied with this pedometer. It stays clipped on my belt really well (I had one of a different brand that fell off and broke), the display is large and easy to read at your waist, and all the functions are wonderful.I shopped around a little (ended up buying it at The Sports Authority for the same price as online), but I'm glad I ended up with this one. It's great to see how far I've travelled in the day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pedometer!
I was skeptical at first. This is my first pedometer, and the only reason I had never bought one before is because I had heard from many friends that they can be difficult to calibrate. But I found that calibrating this model was a snap.

The Sportline 345 is relatively basic. It tracks steps, distance, and calories, and it has a clock. It does not have the capability to save your data over several days, so you just have to reset each time you want to use it.

The clip keeps it relatively secure on my waistband, but I have two boys under the age of 2, and they have a habit of pulling or knocking the device off. Fortunately it stills runs perfectly even after many bounces on the floor.

One word of advice ... shop around. I bought this model and found other Sportline pedometers for a LOT less money at a major discount department store. The price here is pretty much the only reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5. ... Read more
